What's new

Seed idea ?

IC mag should have a seed focused section but anyway I had a new idea to dedicate this crop to get some homemade seed stock.

I was planning to X all males like always but have 8 nice big ladies & a single solid trifoliate male in the room just flipped to 12/12.

My only unknowns are is this going to majorly hurt value / yield / quality ?

What do other people think seeded bud ?

Bag the male's pollen when he drops and individually pollinate the ladies on a couple of branches each(you can get a few hundred seeds on each medium branch easily. That way you get loads of seeds but much more Sinsemilia. If you just seed the whole lot you will get Thousands of seeds(do u really need that many?)and not a lot of bud...and cleaning out the seeds for smoking is a Pain IMHO. JBo ;]

Ya I don't need thousands of seeds, be thrilled to have a couple hundred.

This is all new territory with males & seeds, all the plants are real strong so it should be a nice blend of 5 strains.

One problem im seeing with catching its pollen is the fact that its rooted in large tubs with the girls & the fans are blowing the air around.

Am i going to have to pull it & pollinate it in a separate area ?

Once male flowers start to open you can put a paper bag(bakers cake bags or Mushroom bags are good as they have a window) round each male branch for a week and then chop him, remove from room with bags on branches then chop each branch with bag still attached....carefully remove branch from bag being careful to keep pollen in bags...Then place a bag over branches on Females(with fans off!)seal at opening and leave for 1/2 days. Then remove each bag while misting Female branches with water as soon as bag is being removed-to stop rest of Females from being pollinated! your gonna have a shitload of seeds. i once tripped with a small tray of pollen. it hit the fan and was blown around. i had so many seeds i fed my bird for like a month.now i remove all males as once they start flowering you can set them anywhere outside of the grow and they will give you all the pollen you need.then stael your girlfriends natural hair makup brush and just pollinate lower branches.

I'm growing 2 (or more) males this run.
I pulled them from their pot, removed a lot of the roots, trimmed the plants to a single, pretty small branch and potted to a 1/2L pot for each male.

I don't need too much pollen (and it sounds like you don't need too much either).

When the clusters have a week or so before opening I'll move them to my PC grow case equipped with a carbon filter placed away from my main grow.

Then I'll do the bag thing.

As you grow in a big tub you can use a knife and cut around the stem at a 3-4" diameter and pull whatever left and repot it.
Or clone the male and chop the dad.

These plants are rather large, cut him in 1/2, pulled him from the tub, repotted him in the veg room.

Going to let him recover then flower him somewhere else in the house.

He should be ready to do his thing in a month when the girls are in mid flower.

* I never knew of the breeding / seed / pollen section - thanks bud..

Yo if u leave the male in the flowering room everything will get pollinated. you should put it in a window or under a cfl. the fans will blow pollen everywhere if its with the ladys and u will end up with thousands of seeds. take it out collect pollen and do select pollination on select branches

I misread your post at first. I assumed the big X meant cross, not eliminate! I would avoid putting all your eggs in one basket concerning that trifoliar male. Only a male from a known IBL can be chosen without progeny testing. Including the pollin of all your males together is a form of progeny testing, that way at least you'll get seeds from the best male even if you don't know exactly which one it was. You only need pollin from a single male flower to make hundreds of seeds. Best way to achieve that is to trim off most of the flowers a day or two before they open and just harvest from one. Also, turn the fans off. You don't need them anyway. Circulation of air in and out of the room is good, but direct fans are a waste of electricity.
