What's new

2 weeks left, Aphids struck

I just noticed a healthy population of Aphids on my girls. I just started flushing, anticipating a decent harvest, until I saw the little buggers. Now I'm in the down in the dumps. I have bubble bags, would the smaller micron bags filter out all the bugs+shit or am I just totally effed? Would QWISO work better? There's no way I'm smoking or selling bug poop buds...

All I am asking is, can I turn these buds into hash, or will there be too many impurities from the bugs?

What's up man...a little more details might help in your quest for an answer.

Do you have aphids on the plants, or do you have root aphids in the soil? If you have root aphids, the bud should be fine, as I haven't heard stories of any root aphids getting into the buds. If you have actual bug shit in your plants that you can see, sure you could do an extraction, but I would bet some of that bug shit comes with the resin....so it's really a personal call; are you going to be selling any of it? Will you disclose this info if you do sell it? etc.

feel your pain, I made hash from a couple plants that went that way. Did a bubble run they came out fine. And really it was fer personal smoke, so I did not care about any impurites, and aphids wont kill you.

immediately go to your local hydro store | garden center | internet and order some ladybugs, STAT. These little helpers have voracious appetites -- the aphids will be gone PDQ.

With only 2 weeks to go until harvest, don't just flush your media -- use distilled water in a new spray bottle and hit your leaves and colas as well, a gentle foliar flush. Much of the bugs & bug shite may be knocked off without screwing up your harvest.

Careful up-close inspection of your buds and trim before they go into the drying phase should point out the direction to take -- bubble hash or drying and curing for smoking. If there's no remaining evidence of infestation, I would think that you would have perfectly marketable bud -- no harm, no foul.

Be extra careful to keep RH levels down while drying your harvest, in order to avoid mold. If it were me, I would use my CD ozone generator in the sealed drying room | tent to not only squash any potential mold problems, but also perhaps kill any remaining bugs and|or oxidize any remaining bug shite.

Good luck ... and (no shit) get those ladybugs ASAP.

Thanks for the answers guys. Here is the situation, Im pretty certain they are aphids

As far as I can tell they're only in the foliage, not in the soil. The black spots I see are either poop or bite marks.
Can anyone positively ID these as aphids for me? Thanks brothers.

Most variants of aphids that I have seen are adult, white with a greenish cast (chlorophyl?), and a bit more flattened out like a airfoil.
I wouldn't discount the real possibility that these are juvenile aphids that have not matured yet, and haven't eaten enough plant matter to absorb much chlorophyl.

I hope you have ordered your army of ladybugs already. (I prefer totally organic methods of pest control, personally.)

They look like Aphidoletes which are predatory and kill aphids but may also be aphid larvae.

I'm with David762 - The lady bug army will annihilate these bitches!!

I got me some ladybugs. There are a lot of them. 1,000 in a 5x5 room. Only problem is, after releasing them, I realized the pests may actually be thrips. Do ladybugs eat thrips? I have some spinosad from a few grows ago, is it too late in flowering to spray em a couple times? Will the spinosad kill the ladybugs? I need info quick fellas, time is running out. A thousand thank yous.

Ladybugs are listed as some of the beneficial insects it does not kill. And yes ladybugs do eat thrips but understand thrips are FAST so it needs to be caught first. I think the combination of spinosad and the ladies will work for you.

Cool, sounds like I am on the right track. Will spraying spinosad at this point in flowering hurt the buds at all?

Honestly it's COMPLETELY organic and approved by the EPA. It's a chemical but classified as a biological pesticide. Biological pesticides are what are used on our produce.

Nonetheless I still wouldn't want to use it close to harvest but the consensus among the collective is that it is safe to use in late harvest as well.

Spinosad is the shit to use to kill thrips.

Just read the thread. Unless you got some nice pics online and are sure you have aphids....sounds like thrip to me.

Aphids are very visible to the human eye. Especially on the plant and not the roots. Thrips are crafty fuckers that hid in crevices under leaves. The larvae eat teh plant tissue. Then they turn into adults. Adults lay eggs but as far as I know, they do not eat the plant after they are larvae.

Your pic looks like thrips. I have had both. ;)

Lady bugs may eat some thrip, but not their main diet.

The down fall of natural insect predators is they will NEVER eat themselves out of food. Think about it, would you eat all of your food when you knew you didn't have more? No, you would conserve. Same thing they do.

Leave teh insects to teh greenhosue and mother nature IMHO.

Get an arsenal of Spinosad, pyrethrin and Azamax. All you will ever need and all organic.
