i would like to know the difference between open pollination and pollinating using a select male.what differences would you expect.i am going to guess that you would have much more variation when doing an open pollination.i am just curious as to the differences in the offspring.

open pollination is to preserve a strain . for breeding i like 1 male at a time. otherwise its hard to narrow down traits as you dont know which dad did what. this is just my opinion i aint no pro. and yes open pollination can give you a greater variety. unless its an ibl then your results should be close to all the same

The main difference is few breeders practise open pollination,, in favour of one on one matings... mainly because of logistics and space. Open breeding using a few males and many females allows for recessive traits , which otherwise wouldnt be explored or discovered with one on one matings to be observed..

Long term and short term one on one breeding bottlenecks available genetics down to those genetics selected, with focus on traits in the selected plants,,, whereas open breeding preserves a wider range of the genetics available for the next generation of growers... and preserves more variety.

Always remember that in open populations,,, early female plants are naturally inclined towards insemination from the earliest flowering male plants,, while the mid and late females are more likely to be seeded by the mid and later flowering males... :canabis:

A good rule of thumb is to include the same number of males as there are females that meet the selection criteria. So, if I have ten females and three have the traits I want then I'll choose three males to compliment them. Personally, I'd leave the same ratio if the percentage was 50% or more but I'd be inclined to include an extra male if the percentage was as low as 30%. Thats because of my ideas about the greater variability of males and the bell curve and whatnot, but each to his/her own!
