What's new

what are your thoughts? please read.

i am a young one still (21 years old), but i have been smoking habitually for 7 years until recently. also, before i continue you should know i am no stranger to the potency of marijuana. i got my medical card shortly after i turned 18 and quested up and down the coast of CA in search of the best flowers/concentrates i could find. i have a meager two grows under my belt and i have been to amsterdam two times while smoking the best sativas in the city available to me. so i like to think im knowledgeable about marijuana and i know how the plant effects/affects me. it has always been a positive thing for me and i luhhhve it.

this brings me to my recent dilemma. i moved from home recently to a new city to finish some upper graduate classes and had been smoking just as i usually do. until one night with some friends after smoking some spliffs, bongloads, and finally a blunt; i retired to my studio to get some sleep. i notice my heart rate is elevated which is expected by anyone when they smoke. however, nearly 5 hours had passed and my heart rate was still well over 115 bps. i have a resting heart rate of around 65 bps. i had never experienced something like this and i started to worry. finally after about 6 hours my heart rate normalized.

since this night about two months ago i have smoked maybe 3-4 times vs. my usual which was every day multiple times a day. each of these recent times i felt as though my heart rate remained elevated longer than it should have and it has made smoking so un-enjoyable and worrisome for me that i have quit smoking all together. this has made me kind of bitter considering marijuana has played such a positive and major role in my life. your thoughts? thanks for reading ahead of time.

Yep,you're done.I wouldn't smoke at all if pot made me feel that way. You're not destined to be a lifer.Time to start making tiny paper airplanes out of those left over Zig-Zags and filling your bongs with decorative flowers.

Chew a little piece of fresh ginger root when your having a smoke. Sounds like your arteries and veins are being constricted (vasoconstriction) and the ginger will open them up (dilate the arteries and veins). I suffer from high blood pressure at times and my circulation isnt too good, but a small chunk of ginger root does the job for me. I chew it and let the ginger mix with the saliva, and it gets into your system fast.
Try avoiding caffiene also as that constricts the blood vessels.

Good luck mate,

FUCK. feels reallly bad man.. spliffs are my favorite way of smoking. i still envision myself retiring on a large chunk of land and growing my own fruits, veggies, and "flowers." that was my plan. i envisioned myself as a lifer and now this? ive told some close friends about my experience and they dont think im overreacting.. neither thought an elevated heart rate for that long was normal either.

i had my heart checked out and the ekg was good.. also my stress test was normal.. everyone was telling me im wayyy to young for these types of test although it was just a precaution. im not in bad shape for my age.. i ride my street bike as often as a can.. almost once a day. ill look into this vascocontriction and ginger though. thanks

I think it's from so many years of constantly smoking, every day multiple times a day, that one day your body finally says "ok, this is enough, it's time to tone it back."

If I smoke more than my body can allow, I get an elevated heart rate, sweats, muscle tension, pretty much a mild anxiety attack. It's my body's way of telling me I'm inhaling too much.

I used to be a heavy smoker from 16-20 too. Upwards of 10 MASSIVE bong rips a day, packed a pipe wherever I went, smoked when I woke up and went to sleep. Now it's complete opposite, and I'm totally fine with that because I don't like the symptoms I get when I smoke that amount anymore.

Try finding a middle ground. Smoke a very small amount of a good quality strain, and wait 20 minutes to see how "high" you get. If your body and mind is doing alright, push the amount you smoke a bit more. Keep doing this until you hit that wall where you start getting physical symptoms.

Like everything, moderation is key. You don't need to let go of MJ forever, just learn to use her when she's needed most. Do too much of a good thing and it loses it's thrill, it's effect, purpose.

all you have to do ask yourself if you are happier now or in the past?
probally was the strain that messed you up or you experienced a panic attact.

not everything is mj, find out if you were experiencing the stresses of your life that gave you the anxiety or what

keep experimenting til you find your grove again. Or maintain your new status quo?

I notice my heartrate going up as well and different strains have different effects on me, all I can say is go about it being careful and if it happens again I would take a major break(Just my opinion, no medical logic here) like for at least a month.

Hope you are ok and don't end up like the guys who can't get high anymore!

this is what i kind of think happened. my body was just saying enough is enough. i tried smoking just a small bowl or half a spliff afterwards but maybe it was too soon because i got somewhat of the same effect. i guess ill just have to wait until im ready again.. because lately after what happened i really have no desire to smoke, its lost its appeal which totally bugs me. good advice though.. kind of reaffirmed what ive been thinking. thanks.

ive been told it could have been a panic attack.. i have no history of these at all though. also could have been the strain but thats what i liked to do.. try all the different strains especially the sativas which are usually racey. thanks for the advice. i think im pretty much the same as before except every once in a while i miss a good spliff and cup of tea. thanks for your input.

Stay away from the sativas and you'll be fine

Sounds like anxiety issues to me. I can't really see the cannabis being the cause of an elevated heart rate for that long of a period. Anxiety can occur for many reason's and can come about unexpectedly. I'd look into this a bit further. Talk with your doctor about anxiety and panic attacks. I suffer from both. It can be very disconcerting at times, especially if you're not aware that the anxiety is what's causing your feelings. Sure hope it's not the weed dude.
