First Time Coco, Pot Size?

I am really excited to start growing in Coco. I have everything and I am cloning now in solo cups.

Is there a rule of thumb for pot-container size? Like if you want 18inch plants use xx gal pots, if you want 30 inch plants use xx gal pots, etc? I know there are many factors like if someone was going to SCROG or LST, etc. Any feedback of your experience will help a lot in deciding container size. I have heard that COCO can do more with less size pot.

I am using Canna COCO with Canna Coco AB. Drip to waste. 5x5x6.5 grow tent. HPS Light.

Thanks!

I found that some enormous plants of mine (finished at almost 5 feet- vertical growing style) didn't even utilize a good third of medium in a five gal bucket.

If you veg them pretty large in beer cups (very easy to get plants 1.5+feet tall) then I'd say you could finish them in 2 gal of coco amended heavily with perlite. I believe most of my downfall in using large containers of coco was not enough perlite - it got compact towards the bottom.

I currently have plants in 2 gal coco with lots of perlite, 2 weeks in to flower. I know they'll finish at about 5 feet still, and won't be uncomfortable in the size of pot their in now. Vegged in ~32oz pots til 2.5feet tall.

I've compared a four week veg in 1 and 3 gal pots and the yield in the 3 gal pot was just slighty bigger, but this could be because they were not clones from the same mother. Compared to soil i'd say you need 1/3 of the potsize.

Canna a/b is a good choice of nutes, had best grows with it. When i used hesi i had some pH-issues and whatnot.

smartpots will let you have bigger plants in a smaller space. i am not sure about the increase in yield. people claim good results from them.
usually you will have to water more often with smaller pots (definitely more with smartpots).
3 gallon pots can grow fairly large plants.

to answer your question correctly....please include.....how many times max you could water them daily....and watts.....

just saw drip to waste...my bad.....i dont no....you can basically use SMALLLLL pots for using coco....like a 1 gal pot can easily grow a 18 inch plant....if not a 30inch plant.....probably go with 2 gal pot for a 3 foot plant.....water 3-4x a day IMO

buddin_904 is correct.
I have found that you can grow a huge plant in a small pot that would be root-bound if the medium were soil.
In fact, I grow 2 1/2' plants in 5x5 (2.6L) pots

A 1gal Smart Pot in Coco can make a single plant produce over 7 oz and be over 4 ft tall. I know from experience. Smart Pots and Blumats....no run off.

loooooove the "SOG" elvme2!.....to the OP use smaller pots than u would with soil thats for sure....i grew 6 foot trees in 2 gal pots....to the poster who said 1 gal per 1 foot...thats outrageous! hes wasting tooooo much medium/space.....i guess this would be "maybe" appropriate if u intend to water like soil, multiple times per week....but with coco you should water at LEAST once per day,,,if not more....hence use a very very small pot and water it 2-3-4 times a day!....and yes i suppose no run off is possible as i see some people prefer it...but a note on that...use a weaker nute solution to avoid nute buildup....that is all....

to the OP....post what you chose and show us some pics dood!

and u said ur cool with drip to waste....well were on the same boat buddy...use VERY small pots.....drip your pots like 3-4 times a day and youll see the magic!

Thanks everyone.

So, if I am running a 5x5 tent with 6 plants in scrog and vegging to full canopy,

2 or 3 gal smart pots?

Either will do. You can use larger pots, but you don't have to fill them to the top with medium. If space is an issue, go with the smaller pots.
I'm sure the 3g smart pots are just a little taller/wider than the 2g.

1 Gal...2 is the most I would go. 3 is a waste. Smart Pots grow massive plants in small containers. I had one plant in a 4x4 tent, and it took up the whole tent. Less is more with Smart Pots, you are wasting Coco if you go bigger than 2 in that small of an area...I promise!

It's not just the smart pot. I am pretty sure with coco compared to soil you will get a better yield in a smaller pot. For my setup 1 gallon with coco would probably work just as well as my 3 gallons in soil. Honestly i probably don't even need the 3 gallon smart pots for soil. 2 would work.

Yes coco will grow a bigger plant in smaller container vs soil...but no way on earth you will get the same yield as a regular 1 gal pot. It wont happen, I know for a fact. Roots become root bound and will reduce yield for sure...I have done both.

how about you answer the ? of how many times per day MAX can you water????? THIS MATTERS in your choice!

I have unlimited feeding capability. I have a drip system on timer. I can water every 2 minutes if I wanted to. Drip to waste. 60 gal feed tank. Waste to sewer (unlimited waste capability).

So I went to buy 2 gal smart pots, all they had was 3 gal. Any negatives of only putting 2 gals of Coco in my 3 gal smart pots? I can't see any issue, but I wanted to check with the experts. My goal is to scrog, I want to completely fill my 4x4 screen with canopy. I will veg until it's full.

Another question, is there a problem with having the smart pots flat on the table? Seems like there wouldn't be any aeration on the bottom.

My grow room is 5x5x6. I have a 4x4 botanicaire table. Drip to waste on timer.
