4x4 Tent - 400w or 600w ?

If you had a 4x4 tent that was 6-7ft tall would you use a 400w or 600w light? This would be for flowering.

I know 400w is cutting it close with a 4x4 space but technically it could cover it, the reason I am considering 400 is electricity usage and heat are a major concern - and with the added heat from more watts I will be using more electricity on fans and ac units just to cool it.

Some other grow info, this would be soil without co2. I don't think as much light is needed with less co2.

If anyone has some experience with a 400w in this grow space please share your knowledge

Lights I am looking at...
* 400w standard hps balast with hps bulb
* 400w standard mh balast with sunmaster warm deluxe mh bulb
* 600w digital hps balast with hps bulb

Definitly the 600 watt..... 1000w would be nice too. you shouldnt have to worry about the heat if u run your lights during the coldest parts of the day. 1 600 aint much anyways.... Sure u can get away with a 400 but the extra wattage pays itself off pretty easy!

Alright, now would you recommend a 600w HPS or a 600w MH with a orange-red spectrum like 3000k? (for the flower tent)

Grow-Op dimensions make all the difference, imho

As well as the strain grown (and how), which will determine working height. With a 4x4 foot tent thats 6-7 feet tall, you would be better off with a single 600W set-up.

OTOH, I am setting up a 2.75x8.5 foot cabinet, and I will be using 3x400W lighting.

Consider using a XtraSun Mondo (ventilated) reflector, along with an XtraSun (magnetic) ballast. XtraSun even makes a convertible ballast in 400W and 1000W, to switch between HPS and MH bulbs.
A 1000W bulb wouldn't be over-the-top if you're using a separately ventilated reflector.

Disclaimer: I do not work for XtraSun or any affiliate -- I just use their products.

I run a 400 watt CMH in a 4x4 tent and get good results but, I do admit I would rather have a 600 watt.

I originally bought the 400 watt hps ballast and all, but since have put a CMH bulb in it, and I'm liking it much better, plus it gets rid of that crazy orange light.

Get the 1k...its not hard to cool. Trust me you'll be happy...the prices of 600 and 1k are the same prices too. Run your lights from like 7pm-7am with a 250 CFM and you'll be made in the shade...i personally run a 450 just cause i like to be covered.

agreed . in my hiddenroom (4ft 2" sq ) ive ran a 600w in a xxxl air cooled hood . from 9 plants lsted i got around 22oz i think but some was fluffy popcorn as a 600w didnt get right down in the canopy . . now i will be running 9 plants with a 1000w . more light bigger yeild i hope im hopping to yeild over 28oz from the 1000w . time will tell .

I got a mag. 600 in a 4x4 tent...It does really good, I get great results......but....go with a 1k......600's will work, but no reason not to get it right from the start....I got a 435 cfm fan for my 600, and that fan will work for a 1k, which im about to buy now.....I went with the 600 because of how effecient it is, but if your only running 1 flower light, do it right.

I vote for the 600. Top them twice and pack them as close as you can. Spread them out as they get taller.
Just try to blast than with light in the beginning so they don't stretch too much, decreasing your light on the lower budsites.
Cheers and happy growing mate!

Holy shit whodair....you just described my set up to the T. Get outta my room man! LOL...j/k.

That's exactly what I run, and it's great. 4" exhaust with a can 2600 venting out of the tent, and a 6" valuline from c.a.p. for my ss2 hood. Temp difs between the 400 and 600 are about 5*.

This is all in a 3.5'x5'x7' tent.

If I were you though...I would probably still go with a 1k(I take a regular ass kicking from myself for getting a 6 instead of a 1k), not much(if any) price difference between that and a 600, I do not know about cooling a 1k though. Running lights at night, and I probably spend about $50 a month for the whole setup, at least this time of year. FWIW...I'm in a VERY warm climate, and cooling is essential for me.

Hope that helps bro!

600 watts in a 4x4 area is only 37 watts per square foot.

it will work but ideally your shooting for 50-60 and a 1k gets you there.

it will only increase yield and bud density. two things that never hurt.

I'm running a 600 digi in a 3x4 tent and the light lacks a bit on the sides(4 foot)
The depth(3 foot) is great. So my vote is the 600 at minimum.

i dont necessarily get the best results by placing as much light into a small place as possible...the increased heat may actually diminish your returns.

Get the 1k adjustable wattage ballast. Late spring, summer, and early fall run the 600 setting. The rest of the time run the 1k setting. Dead of winter go super lumens.
