Ive been running a 6" normal can fan for a year now and needed to expand and went with the 8" Can Fan max. i think the CFM is around 650, it is a little longer but only about 10" in diameter, so overall it is more compact.
Due to some space constraints I had to run it between my 2 super sun 2's, ideally i would want it to only suck the air.
either way it is quieter on full blast than the can6HO.

we'll see if it is durable

The mounting setup on the fan is very convenient, it is a metal band that can be loosened and adjusted to balance than fan if hung, which is what I did. The only downside I can possibly see is plastic... the case is plastic, as are the blades, which are deeper to make up for the smaller diameter. The cord is also not grounded like the other fan, not a big deal but safety first. It can cool 2000W in SS2's very well. The ambient temps outside the box is from 70-82, without AC I can keep the box temp 10 degrees above that when the temps are near 80 outside and 5 above when near 70.

I'll take a better picture of the setup, but here is looking down the run of the fan.

pinneappaloupe,

I know this is an old thread but do you like the Can Fan MAX 8? I'm looking at it, a reg can fan, and a vortex. Let me know what you think about it....I know the 8" one is plastic with plastic blades...how's it holding up?

....I've used an 8" for a couple yrs now...love it...just bought another one for a back up. I mount mine to the filter (pulling air through a 100 filter)...as per their video on the web page...on speed control and timer. Love the shape and they seem economic power use wise.

I've got an eight and a ten they're both on filters (75 and 125) for recirculating the air in my sealed room. I've got nothing but good things to say about them especially the ten they're reliable efficient and most importantly very quiet and compact.

Can Max fans have a higher CFM/watt than any other brands of centrifugal fan offered at hydroponic stores.

The 12 inch model sacrifices efficiency for a high static pressure (read: the ability to pull through many carbon filters/extremely long ducts), so most will want to use the 8, 10, and 14 inch models.

The 14 inch model has a very high CFM/watt but pulls a lower static pressure, so it's more useful for pulling through ducts rather than filters.

Another key advantage, Max fans are only as wide as the duct they'll be installed in, which makes mounting them on walls a very easy and flush experience.

I'm on the edge. Of what I'm not sure.

10" CAN FAN MAX on top of a CAN 150. Scrubs the whole house and is as quiet as the 6" fans that cool the hoods.

I have been using a max fan 8" for about a year. It is attached to Can 100 filter and pushes through 2 x 1000 Watt in SS2's and then out of the room. The room is 10' x 8' x 11' high. It is insulated, in an uninsulated detached shop. In that room I also have another room for veg, that burns a 400 watt venting into main grow room.

I am in the Mtns and the room is already too cold. Last year, I set the fan on a timer, 15 min off, 10 min on. It worked ok but the smell became a factor, so back on full time. Smell gone, room freezing. I had a solid state fan controller (dimmer style, but solid state) but it caused a definite buzz and I only ran it for a few minutes. I would like to slow it a little for sound purposes as well.

Has anyone used a speed controller on a max fan?

That page says Variacs are about $50 used. I think I've seen them new for several hundred though. Depends on current/power capability I guess.

I wouldn't recommend it for everyone, but I built myself a cheap "ghetto" speed controller for my 4" CanFan.

It consists of a double 120vac outlet with the connecting tabs removed and the outlets wired in series. One outlet has the fan plugged in, while the other outlet goes to a power bar.

The power bar has three 60w incandescent bulbs plugged in via those 2 slot to bulb adapters. I adjust by screwing in or out bulbs.

1 bulb is low (and lamp is brightish), 2 bulbs is medium, 3 is high (and lamps are rather dim). For maximum speed I use a potentially dangerous shorting plug.

So yeah, cheap, "ghetto" and with some potential points of danger, but it works well for me and no buzzing.

Chatted with some guys from Can a few months back.

The Max 8 is the most common. It has a slightly smaller CFM rating than the 8" or 8" HO CanFans.....but look how much LESS electricity it uses. For something that runs 24/7/365....a MaxFan will save you like 200 bucks on your yearly electric bill.

Now IMO, that is efficient!!!!

Max Fans fuckin rock!!!!!

They also said to never run any CanFan below 60-70% on a fan speed controller. They are thermally protected motors, so if you notice is shutting off and turning back on, it ain't broke....you just have it dialed down too much and it is heating up.

Hello all. I have myself a 8" max fan hooked to a $50 Variac speed controller, no hum. I also have a Speedster and makes the fan hum like a bitch. My Can Fans use Variacs and have one S&P that I use the Speedster on.
