Aurora Root Pots Vs Smart Pots

Currently:
I use 4" rockwool cubes in veg and then I transfer the plant to bloom where I use a 1/4" coco mat in the bottom of a 2 gallon perfect pot, set the RW cube in the middle, and fill with canna coco and about 20 percent perlite. I use Pure Blend Pro in both veg and bloom along with a few additives (sweet, karma, hygrozyme, big bud, overdrive, roots excel)

For the future:
-100% canna coco
-Canna nutes
-smart pots or root pots

Does this sound like a good idea? I know canna coco and nutes are ideal for drip feed drain-to-waste but will this work? One thing I will not change is the E&F tables due to their simplicity. Which one of the pots I asked about are better, more durable etc?

Thanks! :tiphat:

i havent experienced much of a difference between the two..

Shcrews,

Thanks for the reply! So you've used both and the smart pots are a little thicker? They're both reusable right? I can wash, clean and reuse? Thanks!

Definitely not, I have both and the aurora pots are WAY thicker and less flexible. They are not made of the same material. I reuse smartpots, but I grow organically so I don't worry about salt build up.

As far as which one is better, I have no idea. I like the smartpots better because they seem to allow for more air penetration because of how porous they are compared to the aurora pots .

Right now I'm using 3 gallon aurora pots which end up moving to 5 gallon smartpots, also , the 5 gallon aurora pots fit inside the 5 gallon smartpots, with room to spare so keep that in mind. 5 gallon smartpots seem to be bigger than 5 gallon aurora pots.

Do the roots grow through these in an ebb and flow type grow?...would make it really hard to transplant. Or do they just stop at the edge of the fabric and "air prune"? Thanks Still not sure what I want to do. I'm thinking just stick with plastic pots and put 1/4" coco matts in the bottom to stop the coco from going into the E&F system. Thanks!!

milehighmedical,

Thanks for the reply! You use 10-15 gallon pots outdoors right? I was thinking 2 gallons pots for bloom in my ebb and flow trays. I heard root pots break down and for me that's no good as I want durability indoors in hydro...So I'll probably go with the smart pots but IDK how they will hold up since they feel just like a felt material to me.

In recent I have heard of:
-Farmtek Aero Soft Grow Container
-CAP Gro Pot with handles
-Airpots-nothing like the above "soft" containers and i dont think will for well for E&F with Coco.

Let me know what you think and thats to anyone who provides advice/help.

The CAP Gropots are not sized correctly. I just ordered 10-2 gallon Gropots because they were a bit better on price than the Smartpots. They almost 50% smaller than a standard nursery 2 gallon plastic pot. What a rip-off. Smartpots are at least close in size/capacity to a standard plastic pot. Stick with Smartpots or get the Smarta$$ pots on the bay for cheaper.

Yeah, one of my biggest worries is that when I want to move any of these soft pots it won't be easy.

And I heard that the CAP Gropots are hard to transplant with and that you can't roll the bag down to remove the root ball like you can with a smart pot.

I really do like the idea of evenly drying out and air pruning though!

What size pot and how many plants would you put in three 2x4 trays under 2 1000s? I was thinking 12-15 per tray in 2 gallon pots....or 24 per tray in 1 gallons.

When I re-pot, its usually on the way into flower with no extra veg time in the newer pot...I'm sure it would be better to veg em for an extra 2 weeks in the larger pot to build root structure before flower but I just don't have the space.

stagehand099,

Did you fill the 2 gallon CAP Gropot with soil and then dump it into a 2 gallon plastic nursery pot? That would be the best test of volume. I understand that the dimensions are off from a traditional nursery pot, but if the Gropots are advertising 2 gals and they are only 1 that's horsesh*t! Let me know. Thanks!

SS

I haven't yet done that but I snapped a couple of quick pics to show the difference between a standard 2 gal and the gropot. It's the size of a 1 gal pot. I really wish I would have paid attention to the difference in dimensions.

Stagehand099,

Thanks again! That pot on the right is a 2 gal nursery pot? I believe you (lol) but it looks big like 3 gal. :) I have perfect pots that are 2 gal but maybe they are a little small also...similar in size to the 2 gal gropot. But in an 8" square...what are its dimensions? What is it made out of and do you think it is durable/reusable? Have you ever used a smart pot or seen what it's material is like? Thanks!

SUCH NICE C99 nugs you have there my friend...Please tell me more. What version do you have? I have Joey Weeds and it's amazing but I'd love to try more. Mine are also like green and bright orange covered in crystals...Such a great plant and quick to flower too!

To add something:

THIS THREAD IS FOR ALL SOFT POTS not just the 2 mentioned in the title. Does anyone have experience with Farmtek Soft Aero Pot? Or another one that works? what would you do for a pot with a E&F setup using coco? Thanks!

Hey Super.....yeah, thats a 2 gal nursery pot for sure. Thats what I veg in and then on to 5 gallon for flower. If you go with Gropots, just be warned they aren't sized standard. Need a 2? Go with 3, etc.

The C99 is a cut I have been growing for 10 years. Original Bros. Grimm bought at Heaven's Stairway in 2000. I have some Joey's beans but have never needed to pop them because this cut is "The Holy Grail", hee hee. At least thats what they said. 52 days is perfection and my peeps don't want much of anything else. I do an old school Kush for my insomnia from all the Cindy I puff, lol.

Hey, hope I was able to shed some light on the CAP bags. False advertising and I'd send 'em back but it wouldn't be economically viable. Take care.
