What's new

fluoros or hid in veg

does either one make a difference in yield if you have plenty hps lighting in 12/12?..i'm talkin veggin for 2 or 3 months time..would using hids affect the size or quantity of buds?

If your going to want strong plants go for HPS as the plant will stay shorter and denser contributing to a heavy harvest..

Don't know about hps keepin things shorter......

The more light whether HID or floro the stronger, thicker and bigger they will be in a shorter time frame.Adding more light "can help" in you not having to veg for longer periods. If using a HID use metal halide to keep plants from getting to much stretch between nodes. If ya got the xtra $you can't go wrong with the T-5 units.

would you prefer t5s over metal halide?

If you're looking to veg for two to three months, you're gonna end up with some pretty big plants. Unless you plan on doing some serious LSTing or SCROGing, the size of the plants means that you won't get good illumination from fluros. I'd definitely go for an HID.

i'm topping, lsting and scroggin..this go round the plants were 21 inches tall when they went into fering room..i tie em down

In that case, fluros will probably do ya - you'll be able to get your canopy perfect for flowering. I suppose the growth might be a bit slower than with an HID, but as long as the roots develop and you get plenty of bud-sites, I can't see any reason to bother with all the heat you'd get off a MH or HPS.

Foilage seems to loveeee Fluoros and CFL's. However, after they get past a certain size of probably 2ft wide and high, I switch to MH for more lumens and penetration.

right on ursus

for a larger plant switch to HID, its hard to get good light penetration with flouros

i have grown many 2 to 21/2 foot plants in veg under 220 watts of pll t5.i have also grown many plants same size under 2 ninty watt ebay ufos with great results. for vegging only i think either led or t5 work better due to less heat.in my room i battle heat from my hps in both veg and flower areas so i have never tried hid lights for veg.all my plants have been done with lst and sometimes super cropping due to high growth rates and they only showed bad leaves on bottom a few times when i was waiting for room in flower chamber.

For Veg: MH>Fluoro 6500k>HPS
For Flower: HPS>Fluro 2700k>MH

Go with a MH if you've got the funds. If not, get bright white cfls.

the thing is,i can only have 4 plants in my house at one time..the faster they veg the faster i can put em in the flower room..i'm already usin fluoros and they work very well..just curious if hid would speed things up..

if u want to veg for that long mine as well go with the mh. maybe start them under the floros but after like a month switch them under the mh then when u want to flower them with a hps.

I have 1000w MH and some 8 bulb T5s,
I like the T5s if the numbers of plants fits under them.
when they get too tall and I need the penetration then i use the MH.
I prefer the T5s tho if I had my way, the plants stay shorter, you can get the T5 down to few inches above the plants plus less on the elec bill an less heat than 1KW HID and bigger foot prints using comparable wattage between the two.
Ive had the best looking seedlings since I started using T-5 mullti bulb lamps

heres what mine look like after vegging under T5s

the best price I found new is here
you can also find them on ebay.
you can't beat the $208 price at avante gardens
and get the 4ft units if you can, you won't regret picking one of these up
you can use other lighting but this is what works really well for me
