1000w Light shutoff/ can I run from a 240 dryer outlet?

So I'm just setting up my new setup to give it a test run and getting everything started.

However, when I plug in my 100w digi ballast the light turns on and starts warming up. About two minutes in the light shuts off though. the ballast is still running, but no light. I know this is probably a pretty basic electricity problem, but any ideas as to why it is doing this?

Also, I have a 240v dryer outlet nearby that would be perfect to run my light off. Is there any way that I could take advantage of this situation? I don't do any of my own electricity, but I have a friend that I can get to handle it if I need to.

Thanks in advance

You can use your dryer outlet, many people do but chances are it has a different kind of outlet. Your problem is more likely your ballast. You should be able to run your ballast 110v. Karma, One:ying:

id return the ballast and your ballast is probly prewired for 110v so yeah i would just return it as its obviously not working correctly....

Sorry. I didnt make that very clear. I am currently running my ballast from the 120v outlet (15 amp breaker). Also there was nothing else running off the breaker besides the light and I am still having the problem.

I brought up the 240 because it would be ideal for me if I could run my light off the 240 and the rest of my equipment off the 120 (live in california so fans AC etc)

Sorry for the confusion

Scratch that. It is actually a 20amp breaker. And I tried running it off multiple breakers throughout the house and same result.

Has to be a defective ballast right?

I would think so . I have had 3 digital 1's do the exact same thing to me. You could try a diff light bulb but by the sounds of it I would say it's your ballast. I have found with your ballast I have had much better luck with them if you put a fan on them.
