What's new

If I take a cutting of a cutting of a cutting...problems?

But the mother was a clone wasn't it? So effectively you are cloning from a clone. Doesn't hurt, I've maintained the same strain for nearly 9 years, constantly cloning, constantly replacing the mums.
I guess you're right I just meant I keep a mother for a year or a lil more then clone from her to restart the cycle. I wouldn't JUST root a clone to clone it again I guess thats what I meant.

Bonsai mom under a small floro, and your good. New clone every so often made into new mom. Replace old mom when too big. I keep moms about 5 months and then make a new one. I never notice any difference in the vigor or potency. Got one thats been going for a few years now.

I don't keep mothers and have been taking a clone from a clone and so on for over 5 years now. In that 5 year period I've had a harvest every three months on average. Also it was a clone when I got it, so who knows how long it has been floating around.

I have yet to observe any change what-so-ever. One thing that can change the clone is the environment, but not permanently. My friend grows my clone and he gets more indica looking leaves, and mine more sativa and thin. It took about five grows to develope like this at my friends, so I believe it is possible for a clone to adapt to its environment. Other than leaf size it still has the same taste, high, potency, yield and stretch as mine. Did I mention both were the same clone?

Maybe it's just me but

There is an aspen colony that is all clones, the entire forest. It is 80 000 years old. they have discovered it is losing vigor.

It takes a while to lose vigor. In 80 000 yrs I'd be looking at popping some seeds for a new line. :tiphat:

Weed plants have 3 stages of growth. Vegetative juvenile, vegetative adult (leaves start alternating), and flowering. The apical shoots at the base of seedlings will remain juvenile and so will the growth from them - don't believe me go take a look. Leaves are paired evenly across the stem whereas above that you will see leaves begin to alternate as the plant gets older.

Flowering clones present a problem. The plant needs to revert back from flowering to vegetative state and this takes a lot of genetic 'undoing' before it can resume vegetative growth. I believe with this behaviour you might lose vitality in the strain a bit faster than 80 000 years. Maybe in 10 000 years, maybe in 10, or even 1 depending on how many mistakes get made genetically forcing an annual plant through this unnatural process time and time again.

Clone just before you switch to flower, if you want to keep growing 3 stages, juvenile veg - adult veg - flower then go for the clones right down the base. The arguement that auxins are produced in the tops of plants so the top clones are best isn't true in that all apical leaf sets will be pumping auxins and picking off prime cuts from the tops of your ladies just hurts. Clone a bit earlier and let them catch up to the size they wouldv'e been had they been bigger sized clones.

My opinion.

I'll seconds this. I have root pruned and repotted my bonzai mums, but when it comes down to it I prefer to use the veg time on my mom for a nice plant to go into flower instead of a root trim that just throws her into a 3 or 4 week stall. I clone more often than I have to so I have a backup of everything at all times and I have often chosen to repot mom > flower, instead of root pruning and flowering a clone... NBD IMHO. I have been doing it for just over a year on most my strains , and maybe in the future it will be an issue, but it doesn't seem to have any effect at this point. Things still fall into their standard growth patterns that I noticed as they were pups. My moms and my veg/mom/clone cab are tiny and it is easier for me this way. I grow mostly organic and the feeding wth water has been an ongoing issue for me so starting over with aclone in new soil keeps things easy as well. I'm surprised that more people aren't bashing this conecdpt but as was said earlier, this is pretty much the story of all the elites that we hold so dear.

3-4 week stall? Did you root prune with a chainsaw?:bigeye:

Fresh coco and earthworm castings after a root prune get me going again within a week. I use a sharp Santoku kitchen knife and trim 1-1.5 inches off each side and the bottom.

Lots of posts already and I'm sure my lowly post count doesn't inspire confidence, but I have a strain now from bagseed grown outside for looks (too far North for outdoors) that tweaked our interest. 3.0 years now since the first cut to bring her inside. She's been through 7 generations of cloning and 2 regens with the latest moms vegging for the last 6 months under sunlight and my friends still don't seem to want me to put the bag away. lol

I never factor in 'post count' on any question. I'll quite often ignore questions that I think are easily self answered, but I never consider post count. I didn't even notice your post count until you mentioned it. I'd be willing to bet that most ICmaggers are the same.

mgk :tiphat:

OK, that was a bit off I guess... it's been a while since I bothered. Maybe things happen faster than I remember but I seem to remember it taking awhile to get back up and running. I guess I'm going to have to do some root pruning again to see! More than likely I was wrong on that one I guess! Thanks for calling me on it. I do take off most of the foliage though (per the bonzai mum thread) so maybe that is part of it... or I'm just mistaken.

My two cents about mothers. You really don't need them but it's good to have them for emergencies. Heaven forbid a hurricane/forest fire/ ice storm is heading your way and you only have room take a few plants with you in a evacuation.
