Caught Red-Handed by Land Owner...

So I was carrying the last pound or so of flowers out of my grow on Saturday and about half way to my car I'm greeted by a fellow in his mid 50's or so with a little dog. One second I'm walking on the edge of a bean field, basking in the glory of a completed season and then all of a sudden a fellow comes out from the bushes between the pond and field and asks me what's in the three, five-gallon buckets I'm carrying.... And that was the beginning of a dicey little encounter that lasted the duration of a quarter mile walk and then some.

"What's in the buckets."

Hey, what's up? Nothing you'd be interested in," I replied.

"You hunting deer?"

"No, I only shoot birds."

"Fishing?"

"No. Are there fish in this pond?"

"Yeah, there are. You making meth or some shit like that?"

At that point I stopped, faced him, took off my sunglasses, looked him square in the eye and told him that I had nothing to do with meth or those who used it. I told him I just wasn't that kind of person.

Then I asked him if he had ever heard of ground cherries. He hadn't, so I explained what they were and told him that I had a couple of secret patches that I'd been fighting the local deer for.

The mood had seemed to soften a little so I told him my first name and asked if he was the land owner. (He was.) I complimented the property and told him that I had been interested in purchasing it since seeing it for the first time the year before. I told him I'd had a professional photographer out on his corner of the prairie taking photos.

He asked me why I hadn't called him or the realtor and I told him that I had talked to a woman and then gave him the description of price and parcel size as related by her. I also took that opportunity to quiz the land owner on a bunch of details that I hadn't gotten from the realtor. I asked the guy for a business card so I could call him in the future with any questions. And he confided in me that a connector route to the interstate was going to be built on the property line in the future and that the land wouldn't stay quiet and peaceful for long.

He gave me his card, I introduced myself. We chatted a bit and then he removed his truck from the entrance it was blocking to prevent my escape and I was on my way with a last load of ground cherries...

Talk about a rush. I had nothing planted on this guy's property. I was only using it for access. And btw, most everything I told the guy was the straight-up truth. Just not the whole truth.

fuck thats a close call, sounds like you did a good job though keeping a level head and just dealing wisely with the situation. Enjoy your ground cherries :)

Allways tell the truth even when you lie... like you have proven, it works every time;)

I got a similar story but not too serious... was back a year ago when I did my first grow which was outdoors, and we needed alot of soil, we were to cheap to go to the store and buy bags of soil for 180plants so i went to a park which was under construction and there was this huge pile of dirt with perfect ph..fresh for the plants they planned to put over there.

So I went there in the middle of the night and started moving sack after sack and then suddenly i see an old man in his 50s comes up to me with his dog, and i told him: Good your back, help me out, without looking at him, I want to go home soon. "oh your not my friend sorry " he was totally confused and asked me what in the world I was doing so I told him this story, I thought he was my partner who I was working together with, he was always slacking and taking breaks..I told him we were doing our community service here and these were the only our that we could work since I had a late night job to attend...one thing lead to another and he started talking about when he was young and I stood there for 20mins listening to him.....and about all problems they had with graffiti on their park so he was doing a night run...after awhile he wished me luck and left, there i stood laughing for 5mins straight haha..

I doubt the old man was relying on a shotgun. More likely, a pistol under his shirt, if it was the US.

Wow that was close. A guy just got busted cuz he was cutting his plants and a hunter recorded the whole thing and gave the video to the cops and then the pigs tracked him down and caught him with 10lbs at his house....what a rat piece of shit...why would you report someone for something like that? For all intents and purposes he had gotten away with it...glad you did.

The old man was probably cool and I bet he smelled the herb in the buckets. He was looking for some buds bro you should have hooked him up!

He definitely had a gun though they always do. ;)

Great story, sandnut. Reminds me of my experience.

Thanks for all the kind responses. I've been busy cleaning out my shorts for the last few days. And don't think it hasn't crossed my mind that it might not all be over with yet....

Anyway, ground cherries are Physalis virginiana. They are a small, yellow, edible fruit that grow low on the prairie. Each cherry comes wrapped in a skin similar to a tomatillo. I've found a bunch of ground cherries on this piece of property and it is the season. However, the local deer would never let three 5 gallon buckets of these things go to waste. (And I never told the guy I was carrying ground cherries.)

While I didn't know it at the time, running would have done nothing but give signs of guilty behavior after finding his truck blocking the one entrance to this property. My guess is that the land owner would have left his left his truck blocking that gate and called the sheriff right then and there if he was in a mood to pursue the matter.

If that wasn't bad enough, I also had to pass a squad car monitoring the traffic at a rural youth soccer complex on my way home. (Only the second time I saw the po-po on that route in two seasons.)

Anyway, thanks for all the replies.
