What's new

ran out of lc's mix

heres the deal..i had 4 plants in 5 gallon buckets that needed to be transplant into 10 gallon containers,1 week before 12/12.....,the containers were just too small..not sure how that happened but my guess is this is 1st time i've used ewc, guanos, humic acid,fish/seaweed on my plants in veg and they are bigger than anticipated..not in height because i tie down,lst,etc...before i used lc's mix and watered with molasses only...just never had so many roots to fill out a bucket like this..as i said they wouldnt fit in 10 gal so the 1st thing i found theyd go in was 18 gallon containers...problem is i only had enough lc's mix for a total of 40 gallons(4 plants,10 gal in each container)..gonna need a lot more of somethin...dont have time to mix and let soil cook so lookin for suggestions on what to buy that will blend in with what i've got....lc's mx wth recipe #1

Im gonna try some math here. 40 gallons of soil / 4 plants = 10 gallons per plant + 5 gallons of soil on the plant that needs to be transplanted = 15 gallons total of soil.
15 gallons of soil in 18 gallon container only leaves 3 gallons defecit.

I would say mix up 12 gallons of lcs mix put it at the bottom each container. By the time the roots grow into that portion of the soil it will be fully cooked. At the very least it wil be completely inoculated by the biomass above it.

( this assumes you have 40 gallons available not 20 gallons left after the filling your 5 gallon buckets. I couldnt tell from your post)

Where in the country are you located? (If you are in the US). Best option without knowing specifics may be the Black Gold potting soil as you can find it nationwide.

I'd be a little hesitant to run LC's mix hot in the bottom of the containers. Not a lot of O2 down there for the aerobic microbes.....

I've found you don't necessarily HAVE to let it cook.

My plants have been doing great mixing everything up and putting them right into it lately.

I have no actual experience with LC's Mix. Does it heat up or not? If it does, then I'd treat it like an unfinished thermal compost and let it cool before adding plants. If not, then there's no reason that I know of to let it sit for 2 weeks.

id buy some bulk compost somewhere( nursery, landscaping company, etc...), mix it with some small crushed lavarock( 2:1 compost:lavarock) . possibly a little bit of native soil(5-10%) if its anything but solid clay or pure sand and use that as a base mix. amend with ferts to your own desires.

I use LC#2 and have run short at times. I have substituted "Roots Organics" bag soil several times in such an emergency or when I'm too lazy for another solution. Just add a bit more dolomite lime & perlite to this bag soil and fertilize as you grow. It'll work.

fellows,i appreciate everybodys advice..heres what i did...had enough mix to transplant 3 at 18 gallons per container..4th one i put in organics choice with some ewc, humic acid,fish/seaweed and molasses...if nothin else this will be a good test...had to get this done while my son was around to help and theyre scheduled to go in flower room tuesday week...you guys had some great ideas and i will remember them...no way in hell i would have run out of mix if i thought there was a possibility of needin it..2mor i'm gonna mix up about 100 gallon......anybody have experience with organics choice in 12/12...should i use the guanos, etc just like lc's mix?...no matter what i've learned somethin..YE CANT HAVE TOO MUCH MIX ON HAND!

I'm mixing soil for plants that are going in a room i've yet to build. figure it can just sit while i figure everything out. lol this thread answers my question about whether I should make a lot of soil or just enough..:tiphat:

I'd like to have, at the least, twice as much as I really need on hand. Don't have that much yet but it is fun to run beneficial plants in them if the weather is nice or in the corners of secondary lighting. Even better I think would be if I could have it all made up in 5 gallon containers sitting through an entire run and then switch back in forth.
