I'm not trying to be sarcastic or anything. Many times our intuitive way of thinking is often wrong. Maybe because until we measure stuff we are making way to many assumptions. This is part of being human.

All I can say is try it. In a simple set up where you can easily observe the actual behavior of the coco. The coco quickly forms a net of its own due to the fibers. I've used large drain holes with no leakage in the past.

If there is no leakage wouldn't it be one less thing to do and maintain when building and running PPKs?

I'm playing with some stuff called Axis which is calcined diatomaceous earth. The stuff is much lighter (when dry) than Turface. Some people claim that this stuff has some advantages over Turface. I like the idea of a medium that is reusable over a long period of time.

I've used diatomaceous earth for bug controll in my attic and out in the yard.. good stuff..

I realize this Axis must be much more coarse than the bug stuff..
but I thought DE was silica based.. is that silica, as in makes my Ph go UP!??

don't worry about it. nothing bothers me. i'm like a duck. i can swim, walk, and fly. you are right about assumptions. maybe i've made one assuming you are using one of these.

the coco falls out of my 1.5" tailpiece tube when i forget to put a piece of screen over the bottom end. i've accidentally omitted it several times and, when i rinse it in, it basically dumps the contents of the tailpiece.

it is supposedly neutral

but I just randomly checked on of my Axis reservoirs and the pH was 7 (all my other stuff is around 5.8 - 6.2).

I plan to keep an eye on this, thanks for the input.

Maybe I am packing it too tightly... because once I water and a little bit comes out, none comes out.

I hope I am not packing it too tightly. This can affect drainage. I wonder how a tightly packed wick compares to a not so tightly packed... Maybe I am over complicating things here...

Can someone tell me if I'm off base here...

I have all my bucket in buckets sitting in a tray. They are not yet connected. My goal was to get the EC on all the buckets about equal before connecting them and putting them on the floor.

I'm now starting to think that due to small diffs in the hight of the drain hole (where the hose will go) I may be actually causing the EC to not be equal and would get them balanced out quicker if I just connect them and start the bottom watering.

Right now I have just flooded the table to a little higher than the drain holes so they are all sharing a common water level and source till I can get the gromets I need to hook up my t connectors and hoses...

2-4 cut, merge into "Y" shape. lower part of "Y" are base of scions. Y shape is to keep terminal flowers growing in different directions, to not crowd. the Y is stem bent @ a node. @ least 1-2 nodes beneath intersect of Y.

1.
slice base of scions to 1-2" long, @ 60* angles. to expose cambium
2.
wrap & tie w/ floss. tightly, from top to bottom of sliced part.
3.
coat w/ honey or molasses, or bloom fert, to seal wound & decrease water-loss.
4.
place into soilless media, for 2-3 wks. keep media moist.

cambium bonds. tissue connects, nodules form. scions makes 1 cutting, from 2-4, in same tyme as just 1. 1 root system.
can also attach established root, from another plant, to the base (in center) of the bonding/rooting scion(s)....

slice/snip off, or leave on...in small container. take out & examine. & replace after slice/snip, if/after bonded & roots. dont cut off roots! parts may seem bonded, but may not be. keep pressed together.

it gro around, may/will eventually burst thru floss.

roots may form on 1 scion, but not all. 2 of 4 maybe. that ok. pressed together, eventually bond.

some may not bond fully, or only partially. select scions w/ approximate same diameter base, and make slices @ same length & cambium exposure.

if different genotype/phenotype, try select similar stem diameters. some woodier than others. some large area cambium, some only small area

alternative to floss, maybe tape... all in imagination

Thank you for your answer.

I think this is a very interesting way, with proper diligence, to work with breeding projects (and mega moms) in limited plant count regions (re: genetic diversity). That may not be what you were speaking towards, but I like the idea nonetheless.

I think any sort of seed grow would be an excellent indication of what this system can do....

If you can produce anything like 10 oz on your average seed and you clearly have a winnah!!!!

hi, why seeds? don't you think you will get more yield from clones. especially in your situation where you are going to be trying for consistency?

i've still got a few feminized isis beans i could try but it is a bitch to clone and stinks big time in flower. at week 6 of flower i could smell it out on the road in front of my house. a very sativa plant. i got 7.5 zips with the first one in a 5 gal hempy using perlite.

i've got some other, obviously heavily indica beans that i know almost nothing about except the person i got them from said it was "really good smoke".

i am planning on ordering some new stuff to play with. but i probably won't grow a seedling to maturity. i like to sex them and take numbered clones to experiment with.

it took me almost 2 years to isolate this swt#4 cut from a pack of 15.

Just for a llittle more info....

My other hobby is fruit plant grafting and propagation....

The way a modern apple tree is made is by grafting a scion to a root stock....

What interesting and what relates here I think is how apple tree root stock is made...


One way is to take a young apple tree and pin it to the ground and keep pinning the growth horizontally......


then eventually the apple tree branches are allowed to grow upright....then about 6 inches of medium is added covering the original horizontal growth.....

The upright growtn will form its own roots and can be grown quite large....

With the potential of going from attached to mom via air layering directly to flowering....


I would be talking an 18 inch clone at minimum.....


In general I think the potential for the largest clones come from air layering....


because there is no worry the plant is going to wilt since it still has an attachment to mom.....


this is fascinating stuff! years ago i air layered a few clones successfully. actually quite reliable. i've also done a little grafting.
