What is the best ph/tds tester for the money?

I'm looking for a good quality ph/tds tester for a reasonable price, any suggestions? Another question too, do you store your electrode in a solution when not in use or is that unnecessary?

Always store your pH electrode in solution. Acidic calibration solution (4.01) is ideal. Hanna makes a cheap pH pen that is less expensive then replacement electrodes. Store your electrode in solution and it should last well over a year. cheap Hannah meter
A few caveats of this meter, reading is not immediate and may take 15-20 seconds to stabilize. I've found slight shaking speeds up the process.Meter is NOT waterproof and I've heard about them kaputzing immediately after falling in the drink.

Your TDS meter electrodes are metal and should be rinsed after use and kept dry. Milwaukee makes good waterproof EC and TDS pens. They also make waterproof pH pens for about twice the cost of the Hannah meter, well worth it if you've got the butter fingers :) http://www.google.com/products?hl=en&q=milwaukee+waterproof

can echo pretty much everything on the hanna pens - mine worked well (until it didn't), it took about 20 seconds to get a reading, and swirling it about in your nute juice seemed to cause it to make up its mind a little quicker.

it worked well for about a year, then it started sliding PH readings by .4/.5 within hours of calibration

I ended up replacing it w/ a Milwaukee mw802 (ph/ppm/ec) from eseasons - a little more expensive than the pens, but i like it a heck of a lot more. the probe on a wire makes life easier, and the thing just works better. no need to swirl it, every time i calibrate it, it is still dead on, etc.

the only thing i don't care for on it is the calibration knobs being up on the front of the unit. i haven't managed to unintentionally dial it whacky yet, but i could see how it could happen easily if you didn't keep in mind that they're there.

Thanks for the info guys! I'm thinking Ive got about $200ish to spend, maybe more if needed to get quality that will last. Do you recommend getting an all in one ph/tds/ec meter or buying a seperate ph meter and tds/ec meter?

agree totally. i had the 98130, which i think just has a different scale. those are convenient to use and good value

the first one lasted close to 3 years without changing the electrodes, which i guess is a good time. batteries also lasted that long. and i didnt even store the unit in some special solution or something

now i have a bluelab guardian monitor which i dare say is better :p
