You're going to drive yourself nuts looking for "the best" and hoping that every posted opinion correlates with the same item. It ain't gonna happen. There's more than one good fan on the market. Buy a quality centrifugal fan whether it's a Vortex, a Can, or whatever. They're all good products. Good luck.

I know I know.. In fact I already did :)

To be fair , I was only looking for the "best" for my particular application. Finally made a decision though and decided to go with Elicent. I'm sure I'll be more than pleased.

I own both the 8" can fan max and the 8" vortex. Purchased both at the same time.

Best build quality - Vortex
Quietest - Vortex
Same size as duct - CanFan Max
Best customer service - Vortex

I am now just sitting on the can fan as an emergency backup. You could always buy both and compare them yourself like I did. I bet money you will decide on the Vortex.

^^^ Thanks for the comments. I was considering trying out a 8" Maxfan, but now I think I'll just get another Vortex.

I've been reading the Max is quieter than the vortex but I haven't run either, interesting.

Go with a brand name fan as they will be UL/CUL/ETL/etc.. approved. Saving a few bucks on something "value line" straight out of China with out being tested is not worth it.

There are a lot of in line fan manufacturers that are good and some of them even share the same manufacturer for the motor.

elicent makes a nice fan, extremely quiet!
the dealer I bought my 6"-eleicent from also sold ecoplus and vortex,
he said the elicent was the quietest, the vortex next.

Having used both Vortex and CF's, I can't really make a case for the additional money it costs to own the CF.

Both are excellent fans, Vortex is easier on the pocket.

I run a vortex 10" = 790cfm
I also run a can fan max 10" = 1019cfm

I prefer the can fan, my friend on the other hand has the vortex 8" and the can fan max 10" and he prefers vortex, its like Ford vs Chevy both good just what ever you prefer.

I want to say the can fan but they are pretty close to how much noise they put out.

I like the can fan, as well as vortex just depends on what your shop carries.

I have friends who prefer the hydrofarm hoods over the sunlight supply, I on the other hand prefer the sunlight supply hoods.

Go with Vortex. Can never go wrong with North American quality. Their 10yr warranty can't be beat either.

Here's a question I have for you all...

For years now I've been running with the same 8" vortex with the same setup (main duct comes in, Y's apart to line of hoods, then separate fans, then comes back together for exhaust). Well, about a week ago, I notice I can hear the beep of my AC turning on (which I could never hear before), and the humming noise of the room "seems" a bit quieter now. The only physical difference I have noticed is the electrical housing plastic box on one of the fans is vibrating a bit, but the fan itself is still running smoothly from what it seems.

Are one of my fans going out? Or am I just imagining things getting quieter? Is there a way to test efficiency?

If a centrifugal fan is going usually your hear it vibrate on start up if the bearings are bad, it doesn't go full speed because the capacitor went or it just stops working.

Thanks bug, now my question pertaining to the capacitor going out... is there any way to test the efficiency? Like I said, I can now hear things in the room that I could never hear before, and it seems quieter. Thanks
