Mine come up within about 60 hours. Sometimes, a certain seed or strain will take upwards of like 5 days, but I dont do anything special to the seed. Just plant in my starter mix, keep the soil SATURATED (I put saran wrap over the top of my container so I dont have to water it, also keeps nice temp on the top of the soil).

Plant the seed about 1.5cm deep..

Cooler temps will slow germination or halt it (if its really cold). If its too dry, the seed wont germinate. So keep it wet and warm, and it make take like five days. Over seven and there may be a problem/malfunction.

In an average batch, there are the seeds that germ inbetween 1 to 3 days, and the seeds that germ later. (up to 8 days and after that, they're pretty dead)
Interesting to know is that the seeds that germ inside the 3 days time frame usually are far out superior in performence as the ones that germ later.

My strategy is to dicard all seeds that haven't shown their roottips after about 48/60 hours ,counting down from the moment they hit the moist cotton.

It's a bit strain related though.
Some strains show root tips earlyer as others, but any significant big difference in germ time between the first and the last from a batch usually is bad news for the latter.

Bigger seeds are usually also better as smaller ones from a batch.

Standard way of germinating = wet "ladys makeup removal"cotton toroughly with luke warm water up to 25C. never 30C or more!
Now squeeze out all the water with all power you have.

fold slabs open and sandwich the seeds inside.

wrap the slabs in fresholdfoil and put away in a dark place at 25C

Can't go wrong this way or seeds must be verry old or bad.

Be carefull if roots have dug themselves into the cotton, better to check upon them every 24 hours and remove the germinated ones.

Planting out in soil > When small root tips show up that are still under 5 mm, drop it in 1 cm deep hole with the root aiming UPWARDS.

If root tip is longer then 5 mm, drop it in 1cm deep hole in disregard of position but NOT aiming upwards.

hope this helps.

I try to wait 10 days or so before I poke around and see whats doing

I like to put seeds in damp paper towel for 24 hours to swell up. then plant them in moist soil. dont let them dry out. I plant around 3cm deep, helps them shed the seed casing a bit.

Directly sown in soil 10 days seems fair to me Don Dump.

3 cm is rather deep though, but if it is loose soil it should not be a problem for them. (But they'll lose time and energy to cover the long distance all the way out.)

I forgot to mention that my topsoil is a mix of 50% clay and 50% soil.

The clay helps a lot in removing the seed casings too, that's why I dont have to burry them deeper then 1 cm.

The moist paper towel has been my favorite way for many years too, until some guys in here showed obvious proof that the moist cotton method caused roottips to grow bigger, whiter and more healthy looking.

The good thing about the paper towel however was that the roots wont dig themself into the material as they tend to do in cotton.

A combination of the both did not proof successfull unfortunatly.

These days I stick to cotton, no matter what.

Anybody else use the pure water method? I just throw a seed into a cup of room temperature water and leave it in the dark for a couple of days then plant into soil when the root tip is about 2mm long.

keeping them too wet at too high temps could be the thing that killed them.

If it was too dry or to cold, they might still be alive and well.

Not a big fan from the "pure water method" le crunch, too many "casualtys" always :D

using a heat pad can easily get too hot and cook the seeds. just the heat from the light is usually enough. i put mine in a smallish cupboard with a cfl and thats enough to keep it around 70 -75

I like to pre germinate in shot glass of distilled water near the water heater for 24 hrs let them sink bc they need penetrated by the water before they can germinate. Then move them to your cube or w.e. and keep moist under a propogator and voila should come up in 2 to 3 days works every time. I don't use a heat mat but would prolly speed it up.

An inch is too deep! Plant 1-2x the size of the seed itself.

Check the Mandala Germination guide in my sig.

In rockwool, without a soak (just taking seeds out of baggie and planting them) it takes anywhere between 3-6 days for seeds to break the surface but this also depends on temperature. Try to stay near low 80s.

they way i germ is paper towel method with a plate on bottom and top ive had almost 100% success this way ususaly within 4-5 days too! just use luke warm water add a layer of paper towel on bottom and top n put a plate on top put em in a dark 72 deg room n just leave em i just did 7 seedlings and all germed then i move them to rapid rooters for a week or two n transplant into beer pong cups n then to 1 gallon bags and then before flower flip em to 3 gall bags i only have 3 ft height to work with n my plants end up at around 2-2.5 ft which is perfect for my micro growing works like a charm just find the easiest way for u and stick with it good luck!

I put them in a dark room at my bathroom 25-26 degrees celcuis and they pop 24-48 hours.
If it takes longer I reckon it's older seeds and can get quite some weird look at those plants.
