Dried out during germination.

Paper towel dried out over night, 1 seed has popped and the white stem is out, the rest have not popped. I woke up and was alarmed to see that the plate I had covered had dried out because it was too warm in the room. I put more water on the paper towel, are these seeds as good as dead?

Thanks, that makes me feel better. It was only overnight. I assume that more than half of the night they had adequate water as I was moistening the towel a few drops at a time during the day.

U might wanna scuff them in a pill bottle lined w/ sandpaper......
for 2-3 minutez...........then place them in a NEW damp/moist paper towel......then put plate on top,,,,,,,,,,,
THEN............wrap intire plate setup in plastic wrap or large ziplock back.....helps keep the moisture in......
just NOT to much water or they will rott.............:ying:

Just PLANT them and hope they live!

Next time...put the paper towel in a zip lock bag...

Or, better yet, just plant them!

If you haven't noticed...I'm not a big believer in a complicated germination. I just plant seeds and 3-4 days later, the fertile ones have popped. I usually get 95%. It's SO much easier and less stress...plant and forget for a few days.

If I know the germination rate is near 100%, I just stick 'em in small pots directly, but if I think it's less, they go into ziploc baggies.

It's important to squeeze the right amount of moisture out of the paper towel. Soaking wet will slow the rate of growth of the emerging seedling.

Heres' my method; Prefold the towel in quarters then crush into a ball in your hand and run it under warm running water. A light squeeze and shake off the excess water, then unfold and spread seeds around on half the towel so they're not touching. Fold back into quarters and press flat so seeds are in contact with the moist towel, then pop in the bag, breathe in some CO2 and seal it up. Dont forget the most important thing; the label.
