NEW GROWER QUESTIONS

hey guys
i am a first time indoor hydro grower i usualy grow out doors so im only going to try out one plant first. i have a 5 gallon bucket wit the rocks and pump. a buddy of mine gave me 2 randoms that he order online.
im trying to figure out wat kinda lights i need for veg and flowering.
i currently have a reg grow lamp (like lamps used for snakes and lizards). Is this ok? or do i need to get diff lights? i also need some advice on a lighting schedule.

And heres the thing im germanating the seeds now so i only have like a week to figure this out.

thx kotton

Also would i be able to grow the 2 seeds togeter in the 5 gallon or am i running a risk of both turnig male???

Hey there. I'm not in the snake & lizard business, so I dont know anything about those lights. Most people on here will probably tell you either get 2 lights, a MH for veg and a HPS for flower. Although, if its just a mini scale experiment, you should be fine with a like 250 or 400 HPS for the whole life cycle. As for light schedule, for veg you must keep them on at least 18 hours a day and many people even go as far as to leave them on around the clock (24\0). For keeping things simple its probably fine to run them around 18 to 20 hours of light per day for veg. In my experience, after 18 hours of strong light they look like they need a little rest if they arent getting extra CO2.

Then when its time to flower, switch them to 12 hours light , 12 hours *uninterrupted* dark. This part isn't really negotiable, with the exception of one source saying 13 hours of dark for certain (i believe) indicas that get a longer night in their native habitat.

there is no right and no wrong light to use and alot will depend on your setup and what extraction you have got if any, and also the amount of money your looking to spend

the red light you have sounds like a metal halide and yes i think you could veg your plants under this light but you wanna watch your temps

a good vegging schedule is 18/6 and then change to 12/12 when you want to start flowering

growing 2 plants is do able but not advisable due to size of the plants and root entanglement + if you have 1 male and 1 female removing the male will be tricky , just my opinion from growing in dwc

peace

NO NO NO NO!!!!!!!!!!!!! Don't use that light, are you crazy? That light produces way too much heat. My best advice for you is to go out and buy a grow book, read it, then come back and ask some questions. The grow book will not lead you in the wrong direction like the above three posts. If you don't want to spend a lot of money go and buy "daylight" compact florescent at home depot and use those. Way way better than a lamp that produces heat. I don't know how big you are going to get your set up, but I would eventually go and buy a HID set up. (high intensity discharge) a 250 or 400 watt sodium set up would do wonders for you. Good luck.....

ok well its not a heat lamp for snakes its like a heat lamp but wit a reg bulb. i heard about the sunlight fluresent but the space im growing it in as apx. 3ft x 3ft 8 ft high so i dont think they make flouresent that small i have a hood im looking into getting a balast and a bulb

lol ya that dosent make much sence what i ment was it looks like a heat lamp but its a regular lamp i have used it one time wit a indoor soil plant that failed and turned male so i dont think it will be good once i get to the flowering stage im gonna have to take a trip to home depot and look at the diff lights
