Re-extracting BHO

I was doing a fairly good sized run of bho today, when my homemade extractor (which obviously had some flaws in the filter, since fixed) basically blew up in my face. the coffee filter i was using ripped i guess and plugged the holes and the back pressure popped the nozzle off throwing the scuff all over my two glass segments complete covered in close to an oz of bho. I scraped all the bho/scuff mix off the plates and was now wondering if I could chop it into pieces and mix it in with a new extraction, thus reharvesting the bho, but separating out the bits of trim and scuff. Any advice would be greatly appreciated in my effort to amend my horrid fuck up! Im hoping to be able to salvage it as bho, I hate to think of dissolving an oz of bho into isopropyl alcohol or naphtha, to get some nasty black tar

fix the device and rerun the material. i have had blown offs and I just put all the bud back in the extraction device the Tane thats already out just leave that in the Pyrex dish. Run another can through ans u should be fine. U will need some extra purging time but thats fine.

Well shit, I hate it when that happens! I even felt stupid after about the third or forth time.

As HH noted, if you just pick up the shards and run them again, that is the best you can hope to do.

If you have time, you can wash off the walls and ceiling with an alcohol rag and then extract the rag, but it may be best to just move on.

I stopped it happening by changing the way I secure and protect my end filters. What caused your end filter to blow out on you and how are you curently securing it so as to not have it happen again?

all i use is two layers of coffee filter paper with a nylon zip tie to hold it on. the main culprit for blowouts is uneven packing of the tube. secondary is a small rip or tear in your filter edge when applying may tear under pressure. way one is more often a problem, not very often will the second problem come up if you pay attention. problem one is eliminated by packing a tube evenly, or progressively tighter as one gets closer to the exit end of the tube. i have filled tubes recently that were empty at the top section but packed progressively denser, and this way the material cannot shift and settle in the tube, and try to exit.

ya i tried to cram a lot in too, it was the last run, wanted to get it all done haha. im sure that didnt help! now im using these "cotton rounds" that are just about 1 1/2" in diameter, they fit nice in the end cap nozzle and are nice and thick so they wont rip.

Once I changed to silk screen I cannot imagine going back, since then not a single hint or sign of a blow, flows better less prone to clogging if I kief roll the herb before putting it in the tube (since I kief my trim I just add the kief to matter that's going in by rolling it, like seasoning fries).

Silk screen was expensive but worth it.

i used to, but you dont have to, if you know what you are doing. my previous post explained how to safely pack a tube to prevent blowouts. also those of us that use glass tubes usually shun hose clamps, as they break glass tubes pretty easy.

thanks guys for all your help. I broke up all the contaminated scuff/bho today and mixed it throughout a tube of fresh trim. ran 3 cans of vector butane through it and it seemed to recollect a good portion of what was lost. thanks again!

hose clamps and zip ties are fine for a run or two but when running many tubes, gw's solution of adding fine fabric (silk screen would be great) and securing with rubberbands is quick and easy. depending on the amount of material in your bho, you may just dilute with alcohol filter and distil or evaporate. good as new.

Never ever use a hose clamp on a glass extraction tube, it spells a chance for breakage and even that one chance is not worth it if you do not want to have to get a new tube.
