ambient ppms@ 950... how much total ppm is too much?

hey all...

n00b question - i have heard that around 1600 ppm is tops for the mix. does that mean that (after the 950ppm) i can add only about 650ppm nutes?

i been growing in soil for a while and am thinking of giving hydro a try. i gots me some learnin to do before i make the jump, but i can't seem to get a straight answer on this point... and yes i know i need r/o...

thanks for your patience

Hi Draco,

You need to state the conversion factor (either .5 or .7). 1600 ppm @ .5 = 3.2 EC and that is kinda high. A lot is dependent on your specific plant. Some can stand more some not so much.

I have a sativa in late flower and she was getting EC 1.8 (or 900 ppm @ .5). I have since dropped her to 1.2 EC.

950 ppm is very high for tap water. Have you had it tested?

Good luck,
OO

You're saying your tap water is 1600ppm, you sure you aren't reading it wrong? Perhaps something is leaking into your water? I can't imagine not tasting a difference at 1600ppm. That's like a fucking soup.

There's no "max" when growing. Some plants don't take as many nutes as others. It's just genetics. You can probably grow every strain near its potential at 1k ppm and some say 750 ppm is optimal.

WHAT the water consists of matters more. If your water is 1k ppm and 999 ppm of that is calcium, your plant is obviously going to have problems, so ppm/ec isn't the only thing to look at.

OMG! I had no idea! Some of you guys have some fucked up water! Mine is like 215 and 8.5 and I thought is was sucky water... I see now why some people have to use RO and Cal/Mag. I'm lucky, all I have to do is add a little pH down and add some regular nutes.

My condolences.

Draco,

You need to get some RO water and build it up from scratch. No going the easy route using tap. Sorry... Damn...950?!? That's my FINISHED ppm most times! Less if I'm feeding a few times a week.

Good luck to all you unlucky guys...

sounds like they are adding shit to your water thats fubar' flouride was put in water for this very reason az they tried to tell us it waz ok and of value for us but were really dumping waste they would have had to pay to dispoze of and doing it through us' and tha shitty thing iz only R/O and something else get it out'
Be weary of even uzing ice cubes from that stuff' Its sounds like cancer is coming out of your tap'
where eye live now some friends are embarking on a mission to clean ourz up' soundz like thats what your area needz to do
best of luck with that water'

yeah 950 is off the hook! finally got the r/o but the pressure is 25psi... product water is now at about 125-150. gotta get a pump for pressure that will get the 95% rejection - that will bring it down to about 50... jsus...

thanks everybody for the input!! i was worried about being in the 2000 ppm range, but just can't fit much nute in 600 ppms!!

good vibes and keep them ladies green!

what ro did ya get myne take it down to 0. 125 is much much much better but id check the filter out and make sure its workin properly 25 psi seems like it may not be sealed tight enoughi have a small spectra pure and it runs at 50 psi which is still slow as fuck when u filling up 60 gallons.

gotta have the pressure to get full rejection of solids from the membrane...with supply water@ 950ppm, with full 95% rejection we are left with 45 - 50ppm in the product water.

if you are starting out at around 50ppm and get 95% rejection, i could see how your product water would be near 0... lucky you!
