Sheffield Blues and Blues

I am currently thirty two days into flowering on my current grow. So I thought it was time to start a diary here on Icmag, my very first diary here in fact :dance013:
So, Welcome, and feel free to chip in with any comments, criticisms, questions and whatever else you want to throw into the melting pot.
:tiphat:

My grow is small, a tiny wardrobe of about two square feet space, and five foot headroom, minus lights!
I use a single lamp, a 250 HID, alternating HPS and MH. Under it I place four plants, all in 6.5 Litre pots of English potting compost. I use Plant Magic "Oldtimer range" Bloom, and pretty much nowt else. No Epsoms, no boosters no nothing .... No need for 'em.
:blowbubbles:

My grow is for Medicinal weed, mainly. I have chronic pain due to spinal disease, and live on Morphine and multiple cardiac meds (dicky ticker, too). I smoke blow to take my mind off the pain, and in that it works really well. However, it does bugger all to kill any pain, which is a pity. I've tried loads of strains down the years, but never found any pain killing cannabis yet. And I've been smoking dope for over forty years! Been growing it on and off since 1970. My current (indoor) grow has been full time, without a break for the last twelve years now.

The best plant I've grown so far is an old clone-alone line grown locally, called "Sheffield Blues, just "Blues", or even "Livers" (Don't ask, I haven't a clue!). Its not the strongest knock-down type of weed, its more an old school weed, lifts the mood, turns your ears on to music like never before, and makes colours so much more vibrant; that kind of pot! Reminds me of my youth, back in the sixties and early seventies. Here are a couple of photos of bud sites, taken on day 30 ....

The plant on the left is the clone-alone "Sheffield Blues". The one on the right is a plant grown from some seeds. I got five. Three were male, and I selected one of the females on the basis of her vigour and aroma in veg. My small scale means I have to use radical selection!

I don't grow from seed too often, I prefer to grow clones from my various Mother plants, which have all been selected for Therapeutic impact. I have Oldtimes, an Oldtimes Back-cross, Smile (2 phenos at the moment), and Killer Skunk Mums.

So thanks for dropping by and reading all this - don't be shy to comment if you want to.
:thank you:

"Underground Originals" is the best new breeder that no one knows about. There Smelly Berry is great and so is the old time smile. Atleast I think that is the name of them. Some buddys of mine got some of there beans at the cup last year and I'm sold. Now I just need to figure out were to buy there gear.

Hi Rocky,
Yeah, the Killer is awesome, isn't it? And very close to the Blues in so many ways. I would find it hard to distinguish them if my labels got mixed up!

@ Cheesey,
Hi man, thanks for dropping by and my apologies if I have been unclear.
I am growing two plants here: One Original Blues which I believe is also sometimes known as "Sheffield Blues" or "Livers". I am also growing out a seed sent to my by Ugorg, called simply "Blues". I know no more about it than that. I hope this clarifies things for you?
From now on I think I shall call them simply Og Blues & Blues to keep things nice and clear.

Dani, I agree, I am very excited by Ugorg and their approach. I have grown out all of their existing stock at some point or another now, and have not found a dud one amongst them yet. I believe they have some exciting things coming down the pipeline too.

Local ex biker has similar pain management problems from a spinal injury , he was on a dose of morphine or fentonile that would eventually have killed him.

We went through a dozen cuts and crosses and eventually found a couple that really work for him , one is predictably a heavy Afghan and the other an unexpected zamal cross.

Harvest time is important , ten day window on the Afghan for best effect , makes the pain worse taken early and much reduced control taken late which was a suprise to us.

He hardly ever has to take pharma pain killers now and alternates between the plants to avoid building up a tolerance , would suggest Bubba or DC crosses as a good place to look if no local clones available of this type.

Harvest time is important
Foomar, thanks for your reply.
I should explain my harvesting technique: With a new strain, I grow it from seed then take a branch off for slow dry and cure after 8 or 9 weeks of 12/12 depending on strain. Then I take another branch a week later, another the next week, and so and so forth. Then I make evaluations from serious smoke testing. This whole process must then be gone through again, only this time using cuts from the original plant (I always keep a clone back to be a Mother). As you know I'm sure, plants grown as clones do differ somewhat to those grown from seed.

I never bother with things like trichome colour. In fact, I believe the latter to be an irrelevance, if not even a confusing factor for the grower. Best ignored. Branch testing is, IMO, the best and only way to determine the harvest time. After all, the only harvest time worth anything, is that which is determined by the requirements of the grower.

So as you can see, I am open to discovering any "windows" there may be for specific genetics. But after all these years, not one true "analgesic" cannabis strain or plant have I found. White-hot, screaming-point Sciatic or similar nerve agony is a very special beast. In reality, large doses of Morphine are about the one and only solution. My last sciatic peak was over six weeks ago. The nerves involved are still in shock, my right leg feels like it has had a bad local anaesthetic (and has felt like that now for three weeks since the real "pain" started to recede).

Thing is, I have two (surgical) holes in my spine that are quite large and now marked by arthritic debris around their perimeters. Nerves keep rubbing against or snagging on this debris, its true agony. I can only rock and weep at such times. One hole is at the top of the spine, if that snags a nerve I really do want to shoot myself. Trigeminal Neuralgia. Lovely. Look it up!

But today is a good day. Shiva be praised!

I admire your scientific approach to growth and harvest , sure you would have found the keeper had it been present run this way.

Have found nothing that works for toothache or other minor nerve pains myself , various THV/CBD ratios and harvest times tried and no better than a paracetamol for me.

The biker has far less damage than yourself to contend with and a lower level of pain , found two plants that allow him to control it but they are nothing special to me which is a bit odd.

Maybee the effect is from a terpene specific to the afghan , and THV from the zamal cross , no concensus on this.

Bumping this to see if anyone knows if Underground Originals is still doing their thing and if they will put out more "Oldtimes BX" and "KillerSkunk" beans. Anyone?? TIA. :tiphat:
