light left on during 12/12

I know "someone" who has a T wreck, and a L skunk in DWC 30 days in to 12/12. The basement light was left on for the last 5 hours while HID was out for its scheduled downtime. Will this screw thing up stress wise and should "someone" worry about hermes? Also should the light schedule be changed or should it stay the same?

tell someone not to leave the light on, in fact, remove the bulb if it is even a possibility. Someone should only be in there when the HID light is on, so you don't even need the basement light correct?

About schedule, leave it. Herpes, shouldn't be problem if it was once. But keep an eye out.

Yes they can hermie if you do that. Most people won't listen when you tell them to leave the lights completely off because they don't realize they're doing any harm by keeping the light on for just a minute, or using a very dim light.

The best way to handle the problem is to seal off your grow completely but if you can't, then install a green or blue light. Only the red spectrum is used for phototropism by the plant. In fact, you can keep blue light on 24/7 with red lights on 12/12.

but if you use blue/green light make sure there's no red in it. Your best bet are LEDs of a specific green spectrum that you know will not affect the plant's circadian cycle.

best bet is to stay your ass out of there in the dark phase. as was said, unscrew the bulb so it's not used. either that or tape the switch to off. or maybe make a sign visible on the way out reminding your self to turn the light off.

Thanks for quick replies. Nobody goes down there when the lights are off, Just noticed the switch was on this morning. I guess its just a bad habbit of flipping light switch when going down to basement. The bulbs will be removed when HID comes back on. Just hope there arent any problems from this. Thanks again everyone

I have done all sorts of stuff such as extended the lights on period so I could keep working, gone in at dark, etc and never had problems. Some strains are sensitive so I would not suggest making that a habit

I doubt a one time fuckup will hurt anything

I have heard for sativas it is more critical. It's good to hear that one time mistakes can be overlooked. It's happened to me. Except for a White Rhino, I've never seen seeds after culling the males. You'll be OK>

You could put a green bulb in the basement light socket. You don't want to be standing there in complete darkness when grow lights switch off.

BTW, I don't imagine 5 hours of light (in a single dark period) makes much difference. But another episode or three won't require 5 hours, not even 5 minutes.

EDIT: I'll rescind the green light recommendation on gaiusmarius' advice. I was considering your safety and wasn't aware you'd risk plant stress.

Thanks, giausmarius.

i wouldn't use the green light either. some really sensitive strains have been known to produce male flowers on mostly female plants due to the green light on a digital ph ec temp meter. best to get in the habit of not doing anything in the dark phase. as has been said a 1 off occasion is normally no problem. it's too easy to forget the room light when the hps's are on you don't notice the other light.

some plants have been grown indoors over so many generations that they don't cope well with any light pollution. i know that green light isn't supposed to effect the plants and probably wouldn't most of the time.

i just mentioned it cause i recently read of this happening to snype. he had to spend many hours plucking off male flowers from his ladies, once he got rid of the green light from the meter display the plants stopped making male flowers and finished normally.

personally i have gotten into the habit of just not going in during the lights off phase, but as i don't want to stand in the glare of the hps lamps i tend to turn them off while i work, a normal room light is great for planting or trimming etc., as the hps is not good for your eyes over longer periods. you just have to be very careful not to forget the room light when you turn the hps lamps back on.

I posted a short time back asking the same question, and got flamed for it, but I'm not going to do that to you. You have good advice here to rely on in the future, however you are not out of the "dark" yet. In my case the light was left on all during the dark phase for one evening. And yes, it resulted in herms. But I also was having high temps in the room at the time, so I think that contributed to the problem as well. Pretty much ruined that run. So rig the basement light switch to be in-operable, and forget about it. Lesson learned. Watch for male flowers now, and if you dont see them in a few weeks or so then your probably in the clear. Good luck!
