container shape

Does the shape of the container have any influance on the growth of the plant? ie. two containers same volume, one is taller the other wider.

It doesn't make that much difference unless they are made with different materials
The wider pot the roots have more root to spread out whereas the more narrower on has more room for the roots to travel down
Its 6 of one 1/2 dozen of the other
I'd personally go for the wider one

I've seemed to notice a relationship between the container shape, and size.

I've used round, square, and a rectangular containers.

The round and square ones yielded pretty much the same results but the rectangle gave me a plant that was wider one way than the other.

I since then have a theory I've been testing.

Wider pots=longer branching and fan extension.

I plan on trying a setup soon with 1 foot lengths of 4" pvc pipe containers. The desired result tall buds on a stick without much branching. I'm hoping that the container hieght will allow for a tall skinny plant with 1 central cola dominating the stalk rather than a bunch of leaves and runners going everywhere and shading me out down low.

Dunno it's a theory but I would say yes shape does have some effect on the plants growth pattern.

thanks again, i am running myown test now with 2 gallon pots. i have short wider ones and taller ones. one question i have is, with the wider pots there is more soil surface area exposed to light and heat so might have more evaporation, where the taller ones will promote deeper roots and less exposed soil hopfully making for longer periods between watering...i spend some time away from home and am trying to keep a lower maint garden.. i have two tents 4 x 4 x 72, one veg = 600w next gen MH and the other flower = 1000w next gen with HPS. will less exposed soil maintain moisture for a longer period of time ie. one more day?

wider pot = wider/bushier plant

taller pot = taller/less bushier plant

The plant will grow only as supported (held up) by its root mass. It makes sense, a wide bush can't be supported by a few roots going down, it'll topple over sideway.

off topic - this thread reminded me of this bonsai pot plant (not mine):

Simply Amazing!!!
Cannabis has got to be the most versatile plant ever known to man.
At least I think so

Very good to know, I wasn't aware that the shape of the container affected yield, I thought only size did, thanks guys!
