Strange Slime buildup on roots

cooling your rez

cooling your rez

Good info on that EZ cloner tek back in the thread.

My aero/spray cloner is built from the Home Depot 'tough box'
(750 lb limit)

My drain pipe is the long way along the bottom & out through
a rubber grommet to the external pump which feeds my
sprayer manifold (about 6-8" from the bottom of my cuts), which also comes through a
grommet in the tank wall above the pump.

I'm sitting the box on styrofram sheet and floating
styrofoam on the water and keeping the water shallow
at about 6" or 10 gallons.

I'm dropping the frozen Ice-Brix from Staples box of 9 for $10.

3 at a time in the water to keep it nice & cool. No refrigerator needed.

This is a new design as my cloner water was 80-90 F
since Aug 4th ( I still got some roots on some but not all)
I keep fungi down with Pythoff.

I'll post how the temps stay when finished.
Pumps on the way.

EDIT: Oh yah, I'm using the Danner pump with the 'fractionating"
impeller with the venturi tube on the intake side for super fine
bubbles out the sprayer. I can drop some 1/4 tubing
from the manifold
down into
the tank along the side of the floating
styrofoam with a valve controlled sprayer
at the end ,to control the pressure in the
manifold and
for more air bubbles in the rez .

Anybody add pure O2 (cylinder) to the outlet side of pump for O2
spray on the cuts?

If somebody could make a drawing of my design above;
I'd sure appreciate that.
I nice -ice-cooled cloner for pretty cheap.
Should solve the nasty fungi problems.............

i am running an ebb and grow 12 site system. I just realized today that there is some brown slimy substance on my pump in my reservoir and the poly tubing that is submerged under the water. I am not sure what this is at this point. I checked most of the pots and they don't have any of this slime inside of them and the roots appear very white and healthy. My reservoir also smells pretty bad, sort of like swamp water. Anyone hear of anything like this before? Could this be the beginning stages of brown algae? I would love to hear some of your opinions.

Are you using any H2O2? Sounds like algae. Have you been cleaning out your res?

well i did a res change about a week ago. When I did the res change I wasnt even thinking about brown algae. I thought it was just smelling like that due to stagnent water. I changed the res, added a couple air stones and a whole bottle of the 3% H2O2.

In my limited experience, Ebb and flow seems to be much more tolerant of slime and gunk in the res. In a DWC any sign of the slime, even just a bit on my air stone, meant stunted roots that eventually died and starved the plant. The slime shows up in my ebb and flow res yet the plants still maintain thick white roots.

I run Zone continuously and add 5ml of 35% h2o2 daily, yet the slime still thrives in the ebb and flow buckets. Meanwhile I've started several DWC buckets back up again fortified with the EWC tea, and no sign of the slime at all.

We used to have ebb and flow 14 site turbo gardens. Our partner at that time had shitty water pressure and was awful at cleaning stuff, so he ruined them and threw them away. (That part should go in the anti-partner thread!). Anyhow, in hind sight, I now know that the ebb and flow really are not as good as the aeroponic turbo gardens and probably they were more prone to getting "gunk" in them. Which that would make it even harder for a guy with no real water pressure to clean them.

You may want to start your own thread somewhere to get advice from others who use the same system to get some ideas on how to prevent this.

With our aeroponic turbo gardens were are not having any problems at all except for the roots getting huge and blocking the drain back into the res. To prevent issues, we are using hygrozyme, hydrobact (or aquashield), and silica blast.

I am running dutch master zone aswell as adding h202 every other day to the res. Should this be enough to keep everything under control?

I have found that Zone is great at killing everything except this slime. Which means, if you use Zone, you are effectively clearing the playing field of any competing organisms and giving the slime a nice empty home to move into.

When I first got the slime, Zone took care of it quickly and completely for months...but once it came back, Zone doesn't even slow it down. To avoid problems, it's best to practice proper res maintenance. This means water temps around 68f, 1wt air pump per gallon, no light reaching the water, and absolutely NO organic material in the res. Instead of sterilizing the water, populate it with beneficial microbes by making the EWC tea outlined in this thread.

hydrofungicide, this shit blows away everything, from root rot to algae. Completely safe and non toxic, you can use it till harvest.

I ran physan20 through my system at 1tsp per 15gals of water, it def kills the algae but it didnt clean the algae off my roots completely. After 1wk of using hydrofungicide my roots looked brand new, the shit is truly amazing.

mrdizzle I was wondering if you could provide more info on the hydrofungicide as well as where to purchase it. It seems that groovy hydro is the only place. Thank you.

Any others have experience with this product?

I can't find a link to purchase, but this info was found in google's cache.

Due to issues with labeling, DNF Hydro Fungicide-- has been renamed DNF Hydro Sparkle

We see Hydro-Fungicide as a root therapy for hydroponics. It cleans and conditions
the roots of your plants. Now we all know that roots are the foundations of healthy
plants and without healthy roots the plants themselves are not healthy. Like a human,
if you are healthy your immune system wards off disease, so too healthy plants are
able to ward off diseases which makes them last longer and provide better crops. The
feeder roots enable your plants to absorb oxygen, water and of course nutrient at an
accelerated rate.

Firstly you should ensure your tank is free of fungi and bacteria in order to do this you
should saturate with an added Hydro-Fungicide dose of 2ml per litre of nutrient, It
should not take more than a week to 10 days before you see the amazing results.
Depending on how bad your tank is, this may have to be done for more than a week.
Do not use more than the recommended dosage as this may have a traumatic effect on
your plants.

Then for preventative maintenance of your tank dose your tank once a week with just
1ml per 2Litres nutrient. If you add water you should also add 1ml per 2litres of water
added. Its as simple as that. If you think this is costly, well the additional and healthier
crops received as a result, will much more than cover this cost.

Things you should note:
1. Do not use Hydro-Fungicide if you are trying to promote beneficial bacteria
growth.
2. Hydro-Fungicide may cause your solution to foam a little, this will disappear
over time and will cause no harm to your plants
3. All oxygenation methods should be switched off while dosing tanks
4. Always test for plant sensitivity, whilst we have not had any adverse effects, if
you are going to use on a large scale, we feel it is always better to be safe than
sorry.
5. Never use Hydro-fungicide in conjunction with any other treatments
stimulants or preventatives. Hydro-fungicide is a stand alone treatment and if
used in conjunction with other treatments its effects may be neutralized and
the same possibility complies to the other treatments. It may also result in an
adverse effect.
6. Store Hydro-fungicide in a dark cool place.
7. You do not need to stop treatment prior to harvesting Hydro-Fungicide has no
systemic qualities.
8. Keep out of the reach of children. This rule should apply to all products

My search ended with the EWC tea. It's cheap, easy and effective.

Ensure DNF Hydro Sparkle is in contact with the whole root zone. Do not use in conjunction with other root zone treatments, stimulants or preventatives. DNF Hydro Sparkle has proven to be one of the most amazing products available to hydroponic growers. It enhances the growth and general well-being of hydroponic plants by destroying micro-organisms in the root-zone, without harming the plants or having a toxic effect. It's the perfect solution to clear the pesky grunge that forms in reservoirs. DNF Hydro Sparkle is safe to use in all stages of growth so go ahead and apply to give the roots some extra attention! Use it to clean up a problem reservoir and regularly to prevent future problems. DNF Hydro Sparkle is bio-degradable and completely non-toxic to any other forms of life. It was developed by an Australian Chemist who has developed a number of products for the purpose of destroying fungi, yeast and bacteria. Growths of fungi may be caused by low oxygen levels or a slight shift in the pH level. You will find after use that you now have far more healthy plants. This means, your fruit yield will be greater and plants like lettuces and spinach will flourish. Some farmers have had nearly 80% more fruit on their tomatoes and chilies grown in their hydroponic gardens after using DNF Hydro Sparkle.

I bought an ezclone 30 and failed to produce clones 5 times in a row. The slime got me. I gave it to a friend. He kept it for 9 months, brought it back, described the slimed symptoms and cussed me for ever giving him the damn thing to begin with. It sat in the back of my grow room for a few months. I read this thread, made some tea, and had the nicest looking clones I have ever seen. My tea consisted of EWC, Plant Success Rhizo, Genesis Compost, and Flora Nectar. Not sure if that is a good combo or not but I got tiny roots in 7 days and was able to transplant in 14.

There is so much to read through on icmag and a lot of good and bad information. I believe this is one of the jewels of icmag. The ezclone ewc combo.

You had a problem and used an icmag version of the scientific method to overcome a problem.

THANK YOU RICHYRICH

What are the ml per gallon for a H202 quick dip using 35% H202, 29% H202, and 3% H202?

I think the most recent post in this thread recommended a value of 45 ml/gallon of H202 35%, and 60 ml/gallon of H2O2 29% to dip roots in for 5 minutes and then pull off dead mush.

Then do the Physan 20 at 1ml/10 gallon rate for 24 hours only. Then flush 24 hours and then introduce low ppm simple food with beneficials?

I have been reading this 77 page thread in one sitting, and my notes are fuzzy in spots. The search feature is not great at finding little details in long threads. Sorry.

Oh, that question was for a quick dunk, but what about a longer application of H2O2?

It was stated somewhere that if you were going to the dangerous option of using an enzyme to break down dead roots, you had to make sure that the organic material you were making available was not being consumed by the bad guys.

What are the concentration levels of H202 for 35%, 29%, and 3% per gallon in case? I know it would be a lot less than the dunk.

I have written down that it was 2ml/gallon of H2O2 35% to start off with, and then you add more H2O2 every 3 days.

When people write "a handful", "a scoop", or "a tad", it makes me break out in hives. I have no reference point, and I am completely unsure if my "tad" matches their "tad". I have been told mine is unusually larger.

RichyRich,

For your 4 gallon formula for EWC tea that is in your signature, how many milliliters would you recommend of unsulfured molasses in place of carboload? I just can't pay Advanced prices for things. Would 50 ml be a good starting point?

Is a handful about 250 ml roughly? I see MrWeekend used three cups, to equal your 3 handfuls. Is a scoop about 5 ml roughly? I see MrWeekend used about that amount. Am I thinking too big or too small for these amounts.

I don't have Aquashield, I have Companion which is straight thick Bacillus subtilis. I am using 5 ml in place of the 20 ml of Aquashield because Companion is so concentrated.

Which Bio-Filter do you like better

Which Bio-Filter do you like better

RichyRich,

What bio-filter do you like better? The one you made yourself from the 2 inch pipe or the one from Lowes?

The Lowes one looks easier to deal with during rez changes. It cant run dry from the design of it it seems.

Here is a recommendation:

This unit should be put into every rez to house your beneficial army colony. Seed with EWC Tea. Do not clean this unit out, just take out when changing the rez and then put back. The idea is to use this like a fish aquarium filter. A better idea would be to leave about 1/4 of your old nutes in the rez when changing out and adding back new the rest. Just like a fish aquarium, you are only suppose to change a little water at a time. This way you never lose your army, therefore, the slime will never have an opportunity to take a foothold. I found this unit at Lowes in the pond section for $32. They also have bigger units like I have posted previously. You have to supply your own pump. I am going to add lava rocks in conjunction with the bio balls that were included with the unit.
I am going to do an aero run and will see how this turns out. I expect success.
