Odour Control & Exhaust Fan?

Hows Everyone?

First a run down, I have a 4x4x6 box and inside that I have a 600w HPS Lumatek ballast and passive intakes. The location of the box is in a room upstairs, next to a window that im hoping to use to extract the hot air from the box out to.

Due to money being tight I wont be able to use a Cooltube or Air-Cooled hood for proper ventilation. What I really need to know is, what are my options for exhaust fans and odour control in this type of situation?

As for exhaust fan, it has to be quite and be able to handle whatever type of odour control suitable for my situation.

Thanks.

I dont think quiet is much of an option with a 600w your going to have to find a way to mask the sound with background noise. You need about 300cfm's of airflow to keep temps down and the more cfms the more noise you can't escape that.

Now you need about 300cfm of airflow. That doesnt mean a 300cfm fan because you will have losses from the ducting and filter. I would recommend an 8" centrifugal fan with a can 50 filter. That will give you about 350cfm of airflow. I would also recommend mounting a small fan (like the clip on kind) mounted inside the cab blowing up at the bulb to send the heat the bulb is throwing off up. That way you can get the plants a bit closer.

First of all, sorry for my rusty english, but I'm italian...
Since he will use passive intakes, and I will use them too, I have a question that maybe will be useful even for Sweetbudz (sorry for asking it in your thread)...
Exahust fan (with filter or window) + passive holes = negative pressure.
So the question is:
If I don't want odors to flow outside the grow room through the intake holes, it has to be negative pressure always, 24/7, right? So it means that the exahust fan will work every hour, every day, because if I switch it off even for only 15 minutes, the smell will pass from the grow area through the holes going outside?
I ask this because it will be very hard to keep humidity at the right range (60% grow, 40% bloom) in a medium grow room (from 2x2 to 4x4) using 24/7 even only the 4'' fan, wich is one of the smallest extractor.
The solution could be a fan speed controller, finding the right speed to balance heat, air exchange and humidity...I'm getting mad this week thinking about this problem, how do you do?
Sorry again Sweetbudz for poisoning your thread, hope you are interested.

you English is not bad at all. I think High humidity is more of a problem than low. My humidity is usually around 30% and I dont notice any negative effects. So I say dont worry about that. Maybe someone with more knowledge on grow conditions can chime in.

No problem Alexeieff. Thats something I never thought of and I was hoping to have the exhaust fan off while light were off, im thinking now that im never going to get this set up :-(

Back to the setup, so JacuzziSplot, you recommand that I get a 8" centrifugal fan with a can 50 filter. Would one of these fans work:

TD-200 - S&P TD Series Inline Fan. For 8 inch round duct - 538/476 cfm
Panasonic Whisper Line or
RVK

My plan was to have a setup like: Window->ducting->carbon filter->exhaust fan, so that I have the exhaust fan pulling the hot air out true the carbon filter true the ducting and out the window, would that mask the smell? As for the noise of the exhaust fan, im not looking for complete silence, has long as its not heard from standing outside the room where the grow box will be.

Thanks for your comments.

fan filter gotta run 24/7...600w hps needs at least 4in inline fan filter depending on ambient temp and size of grow space

TD-200 will work for sure on High. Low will be right on the boarder If you get a can 50 you will not have to worry about any smell for at least 2 years even if you exhausted into your room you wouldnt smell a thing. I am a fan of S&P mixed vents because they use less power and dont have much mechanical noise. An RVK will work too though.

I believe you only ned the fan & filter combo to run with the lights being on as with the heat the odor becomes more active due to the lights/heat so when they are on so should the fan & charcoal filter and when the lights are off and the heat isn't as hot the fan & filter stay off but I may be wrong.

Thank you, mates!
Sweetbudz, you have to mount the filter at the end of the ducting because it can't be mounted in the middle, it receives air from the fan through the ducting and then blow it out.

If I have this right, its going to be; Window->Can50->Ducting->TD-200 Fan.

The can50 is 8" and the TD-200 is for 8 inch round duct, does that mean I need 8" ducting and I should be good to go? or am I missing other bits and pieces to complete my setup.

Would I be better to exhaust into my room and use the window to bring fresh air in? or bring fresh air from the room and exhaust out the window with this setup?

I was just looking around for a can50 and guess what, I cant get them in my Country, I have no problem ordering one from outside my Country, but I heard they are pretty heavy, can anyone confirm this? if i go this route it could cost a nice few extra Euro for weight.

Again, thanks for all the help.

Imho the filter can exhaust in your room without creating any odor problem, and the passive intakes can suck the air that circulates in the room, so you can choose to keep the window opened or closed...but if the room (of your house) is small I think you have to keep the window opened a little for bring in fresh air and new co2.

Alexeieff: The room that my grow box will be in is pretty big.

I guess its the Can Fan 50 and TD-200 im going to go with.

Out of curiosity, what could I use instead of the Can Fan 50?

and just to add i just run my fan with my lights i dont get smell escaping even with the a/c duct that has no damper on it blowing my tent up like a balloon with lights off LOL but yeah for a size room with a 600hps it wont be dead silent as 95% of noise from the fans is from airmoventment so you will problyu need to make some mufflers out of boxes and stuffing/clothes or buy a muffler and use some insulated ducting cuts down on airflow noise also

alexeieff: I also have very low humidity (30%) in veg and flowering and the plants do fine.

A 600w in a 4x4x6' cab is tough. I use a ValueLine 6" 435 CFM fan and it gets the job done, but it's loud as fuck.

I imagine anything less than 1.5ft beneath the light will burn to a crisp without an air cooled hood or EXCELLENT air flow. Perhaps try to make a cool tube like the one in my signature?
