If I had 4 plants I was gonna scrog I would either put them in one big pot or I might even use a kiddy swimming pool.Just seems like it would be easier to take care of them to me.You could grow them in individual pots in 5 or 10 gallons.

Some people up pot them a week or two before 12/12.

I like to go into the bigger pot asap. Im seeing a big difference between clones I put right into there final pot compared to those that waited to be transplanted. I tested this about 2 weeks ago and the transplant is about 3 times the size of the non transplanted clones.

More time in the final pot = more roots= higher yield (from my experience)

Previously I would have transplanted at least a week before 12/12 though if my situation and space allowed

please excuse my ignorance

but how do you transplant from a 5g to a 10g without servilely damaging the root system ?

i got a 10g that i would love to put my 5g in

i fell like once i try to slide it out the 5g bucket it will just start breaking apart !

please tell me how your doing this so i can give it a try !!!

Transplanting is transplanting.....

16oz cup to 1gl....

2gl to 5gl.....

All the same thing.....

If your root ball is thick'n healthy you will be fine, dirt will hold together. If the plant is a good size you may want some xtra hands to help.

I let mine dry out just a bit so the roots are holding everything together.
Prep the bucket its going into with soil and a bit of water. Grab the plant by its stem and turn upside down.
Give a few spanks to the bottom of the old pot to release the plant.
As carefully as possible remove the old bucket and set the plant into the new pot.
Fill in the rest of the pot and water asap.
I like to use Rhizotonic to reduce stress on the plant and start root formation.

Hope that makes sense.....
Basically as careful as you can. I rarely if ever get a stressed plant after transplanting though. Give it a try you should be fine.

What size pots do you use??From clone to final pot?And how often would you normally transplant?

I find faster growth with transplanting myself

Usually I go from rapid rooter to 1gl squares. Typically veg these until they are about 10"-12" or so then put them into 5gl buckets. Then veg to about 20"-24" and go to 12/12.

This time I took about half of my clones and put them straight into the 5gl buckets. The difference between the 5gl and the 1gl plants is incredible. They are at least 3-4 times the size.

This is under the same lights, same soil, same nutes, same amount of veg time....

I do pretty much the same thing, 5's to 10's with 4 per 1k, SCroG'd. I transplant about a week before 12/12. Just in case there's any transplant shock, you want it to be gone by the time you switch. Then your roots will grow for about another 3 weeks after switching, so a total of 3-4 weeks of significant root growth in the new 5 gallons. That's just about perfect to fill them out completely. Some people say 10's are over kill but my roots have no trouble filling them out. It's a minor cost for significantly increasing the yield potential, imho.

hi milehi
I'm doing 5 gal for the finish indoors.
went from 16oz-->1gal-->5gal
how much better of a yield do you average using the 10s
over a 5gal container?

When I want to transplant plants..I try to make sure its dry but not bone dry.Meaning I like the plant to be somewhat hydrated. The reason is that it makes it easier to deal with. They will bend and so forth. If they are really really dry plants become almost brittle and a little slip can damage something.I do like them pretty dry though so the soil and root system slides out easily.

Once I get the soil and root system out of the old planter..I break up the soil and rootball. From my own experiance this really help the transplanting process as well as make it grow better in the new pot once it has been transplanted.Roots are pretty tough as long as the plant is healthy.

Im sure you know the rest. One more thing is that if you want you can give the plant some kelp or kelp meal after (or before) transplanting. It helps it get used to its new home.

I'm a first time grower indoors do you recommend me trying to grow right out of the 5gal for my first time? Based on what I've been reading I like your method alot. Seems to yield pretty well also.

Let me know, thanks.

Easy to overwater putting plants in pots that are big for their size.Make sure if you do to water where you figure the roots are.

Easy to waste soil also when the plant is in a container too large for its size, the roots grow along the sides down to the bottom and you have a "big empty" in the middle of the container,a poor utilization of finite media. Its not like growing it in the ground and I couldn't imagine the need for a 10 gal container for inside grows.I flower with 1K hortilux and only go to 5 gal with seedplants,3 gal with clones. You're right FlaDankster you've probably been doing this awhile too.Its always best with cuts or seedplants to start in a 4 inch container and let the rootball fill the container before transplanting up.When I'm having to water every other day because the plants demand it and they are 6-10 inches in height,I'll go to a NSI 600 2 gal nursery size or 1.6gal.From this container I sex seedplants and transplant to 5 gal when sexed and clones I grow to at least 2 ft before transplanting to 3 gal.10 gal is for outside gro's man,you can do better with the space if you utilize the finite media wisely and this means letting the rootball basically fill the container before transplanting up.12 inches in height per gallon soil is a myth and a waste!I can grow a cutting to nearly that height in my first container which is just 4 inch nursery size

i cant and wont dispute everybody else posts, but every time I, myself, have xplanted right when i put them into 12/12, EVERY time i pulled the plants after harvesting them, and checked out the roots, i have seen almost no growth at all into the new medium. that is with tickling the roots, but not cutting off any of them.

this same story repeated itself at least a hundred times since i've been growing. so now i always xplant at least two weeks before i bloom them.

however,i will be the first one to tell you i dont know what in the fuck i am doing. i was using hydro nutes with soil. something i now do NOT condone at all, now.

but... i have grown pretty nice plants now in just a two gallon pot. bigger than i have hgt to deal with, @ 3 ft tall.
