GrowLab Tents

I'm thinking of purchasing a GrowLab GL80L in order to take advantage of a spare closet I've got.

The tent's dimensions are as follows: 2'7" x 4'11" x 6'7"

My closet's area is 2'3'' x 5'0 x 6'10

I am just wondering if anyone knows if it's possible with this specific tent to reduce the width.. as you can see I need to lose 4'' somehow. I don't know how the structure works in the top of the tent.

Can anyone help me out?

Thanks dudes.

no you really cant reduce the width man you will just destroy the tent...why not go with something smaller or 2 gl 60's or something? and be carefull of some offbrand tents as some of them will offgas and kill your plants....so id stick with a well known tent manufacturer..if anything go with something alittle smaller then the space you have im sure it wont affect yeild much if you use same lighting you plan to use :) good luck man and remember good tents = more light proof better quality and all that stuff

thanks for the reply dude, anyone else?

I really need to utilize the space as efficiently as possible... I thinkt here's a Secret Jardin that fits my specs a little better but it's only 5'3.

I usually run a SCROG but I want the flexibility to try some big trained plants / sativas that get some more height to them.

Since I am running tents as well, I should say:

They cannot be made smaller. The tent it pulled tight over the frame. Any slack and the thing loses its structural rigidity.

Second, big plants in 2 feet are going to get crowded pretty quick. I have trouble with 2 plants in 4 feet when they grow over 3 feet. Scrog is the way to go with smaller areas, or some sort of intense training, maybe a vertical screen?

I have a couple of points to add here:

1. http://www.greners.com/expertadvice/grow-tent-review.html
Check it out, it's a fairly honest pro con review or most brands out there ... the guys at this store are very helpful, when you use common sense over the phone, too

2. I personally chose the DR60 for my latest tent. And yes, the width can be modified but not by much. I went from 24" x 24" to 22" x 24" ....only a 2" change. 4" might be pushing it but i believe could be done.

Oak dowels or tent stakes.. or just cut down the originals. Chip clips or paper clips like this ...

... these work great for tightening up the excess slack created by shorting on side.

look in my album and you will see mine adjusted and definitely not baggy ... but again I never had to adjust for 4" ....

good luck

^ Your set up looks great! Very nice way to make the tent fit the room! Nice, compact, efficient. I bet the LED makes cooling much easier.

The Grener's review steered me to buy the SJ! Definitely a good read.

The only thing I would worry about is hanging heavy loads on a modified tent with no walls surrounding it, and the tent tipping.

PK: Thanks, yes the LED gives of almost no heat ... it really simplifies things.
Glad to hear you found the Grener's reviews helpful for you too. You are correct about a modified tent and reduce load capacity, but in my case, it was more to do with the ceiling equipment cross bars. Modifying the ceiling cross bar on the shortened width is a little tricker then the exterior wall support rods. Since my mod was only 2" I could just hang the one cross bar on the shortened width on an angle without modifying it. Then I just hung the other 2 ceiling crossbars across the non modified length. I still think 4" could be doable but 1 or 2 ceiling crossbars might need to be creatively modified at that point. Maybe cut, with the extra length removed from the middle, and a solid dowel inserted inside the cut tube?
As far as being ridged when the tent is modified, the tent stands just as ridged with the exterior width change (the way I did it) as it is stock. That being said, I only needed to make the change in the first place to fit it between two tight walls.
I only went the route of using wood dowels because the location is not permanent and will be moving the tent and returning it to it's stock size eventually. Hence i will need the stock metal frames to have their stock length.
I do realize that over time the humidity and heat in the tent will eventually crack the wood dowels and they will need to be replaced. If other people are doing this style of modification in a more permanent location they could just cut the original metal poles to accommodate the changes needed. But they should remember.... "measure twice, cut once."

oh... one more thing.... if you are setting the tent on the floor, not on a riser platform, make sure your measurements are baseboard to baseboard (if you have them in there) NOT wall to wall or else you will have to add a riser or rip out baseboards..... B2B will be smaller measurement then W2W.

Mrs H.G. and I installed a 3' 11" square tent in a closet 4' 6" x 6' 0" a few years back. It took us a few hours even though we did a few dry runs in a large room in under 15 minutes. It was like building a ship in a bottle.

My heart goes out to you and am sending "quick and easy completion" vibes your way. It was worth all the effort, BTW!

but on to the topic at hand....

Perhaps shortening the poles holding the "too wide" dimensions and leaving the tent shell untouched would work.

;)

LOL, I totally missed Wasn'tMe's reply, which basiclly says the same thing !!!

Kudos to Rezdog and his Chemdog IX-III, I swear it wasn't there when I posted.

ahem....

Still sending those vibes, though!

oh if anyone orderes from greners makesure they ship discreet they shipped my tent with the fuckin grow lab label on thebox....i emailed them and next order i get like 20% off and free shipping iirc....but they are a good company minus that little screw up.....and they tried to make it right....just a heads up....i know its off topic but yeah...and only thing i can say to OP is get the tent that fits the best dude even if its alittle shorter just do sativas 12/12 from seed or you can veg for a couple weeks then flip to flower to controll height and i wouldnt grow tall plants in a smaller tent id keep them low but thats just me....good luck

Thanks for the suggestions / comments guys, much appreciated, you guys are the best..

I think I could make the tent work, but I'm not positive where I want to put the fan in this setup yet, so there's more to think about for sure..

Hempyguy thanks alot for the vibes LOL! That sounds like something I would say. I'm feeling em man. Any good vibes are always very appreciated, especially in the assembly department.
