What's new

if i dont see anything that looks alive in lc's mix

with recipe #1 what would be the problem?...should i add some mycorrza?..if so,when is the best time?....have always used compost and manure but i'm thinkin it might not be hot enough...i've let this mix set for 2 months and nothin...although it smells like good soil should..(i'm an old farmboy)...is visual evidence of "microherd" (whatever that is) necessary?..

hmmmm are you seeing fungal hyphae or cobwebs im wondering?

heres a photo from the web of some fungal hyphae. looks similar to some cobwebs i guess.

but really you don't NEED to see anything, they don't call it microbiology for no reason :)

but then again there is always the chance that some spider got in there and made a nest. im sure your soil is fine and ready to plant, i admire your patience to let it sit two months, most people are very impatient and want to use there soil asap.

Sounds alive to me.

In my experience, fresh bone meal (a large component in lc #1) creates a perfect breeding ground for fungi.

No, he means in the mix. Bone meal is probably one of the least effective top dressings around because it takes a good while to break down.

I top-dressed with alfalfa then watered with kelp and molasses, and there was visible fungal fuzz on the soil surface..

when did you start this and how long did you continue?..iow,veg,12/12....and are you usin lc's mix with recipe #1?

The plant is in veg..just transplanted back into its original 4-inch pot,and trimmed up the roots. The mix is part used Lc mix #2, compost, and ewc. I'm not sure the amounts..just tossed it together. Then top-dressed the alfalfa meal, and watered in with 'Seaweed Extract' 1tbl. per gal. mixed with some blackstrap molasses at about tsp. per gallon. I'm planning on doing this until it stops looking deficient. It's already greening up.I'll try to take some pics of the fungi...But you don't need to see anything to have healthy soil..
