What's new

first time with the paintbrush method

my first breeding run, had a male Cali-O and a lady nl#5
so i touched the tip of my tiny paintbrush to a male blossom
covered the end of the tip in pollen
i paint 2 lower buds, basically i'm freaked that the whole plant is going to be pollinated
so i leave the pollinated buds alone for a few minutes, then begin watering
my bright idea was splashing around some water would keep things under control
may have gotten a little carried away
3 weeks later, i see 2 seed pods have formed, maybe 3
i wasn't looking for many seeds, but i expected a bit more
not really a question here, just my experience which was a bit interesting

you need to wait atleast a day with the water or your gonna kill/flush away the pollen before it gets a chance to germinate and grow down the pistils

If you see 2-3 there are probably more...if after harvest you don't have enough seeds, next time paint a few more buds. It's a learning thing...

there will be more,,,,i bet you get a few random seeds...next time dont be shy...take that plant out off the space dust a few branches, put a fan on her (to blow excess pollen off) then stick her back in your room....(dont put her next to the fan when you put her back)....

have fun..
keep it green

^^^ thanks for the fan idea, positive airflow makes sense to me
i'm expecting a few random seeds, no problem with that as long as it's a few

A few months ago i did my first intentional pollination and i also used the paintbrush method. I brushed the lower branches of 2 groovy grapes and 1 of core's PCR with pollen from a male groovy grape. I wanted to be sure that the pollen would take so repeated the process 3 times over the course of about 5 days. I ended up with a fully seeded plant. Didn't intend on it but i cant complain about having a bunch of seeds to play with.

thanks for mentioning that Otto, anyone that reads this will have a better feel for what they will get with this technique

water and pollen dont mix.just paint a few lower branches out of a breeze no fan. forget about water

i had seen some posts on using water to limit extra pollination
i didn't end up with a heavily seeded plant, so it was a success in that sense

i might dust some of my next runs and i was wondering what if you misted the whole plant exept the one bud you want polinated would that help not polinate the rest of the plant?.....

I don't think you're going to be able to get individual pistils to stay too wet to accept pollen. The hairs are VERY fine, I doubt you CAN wet them unless you use a strong wetting solution...maybe that could work.

My advice...turn off the fan, isolate the plant (not absolutely necessary), using SLOW and deliberate motion, gently dip and paint your pollen where you want it. That's what I do and I don't get many rogue seeds.

I keep the male on the other side of the house, I use a piece of paper to catch the pollen, I crease the paper to concentrate the pollen, then I use a very small, fine haired, fluffy paintbrush. Just dip lightly into the pollen and gently touch the bud hairs. It works for me without much "overspray".

I never spray with water.

what i did was paint 2 lower buds, then i splashed water down the plant from my watering jug
so didn't really mist, just kind of washed off the surrounding buds as part of my regular watering routine
not sure if that really did anything, but just seeing seeds on the buds i painted, so it wasn't a disaster

an update of my modest results, really pleased with this simple method
just harvested my nl#5 and maybe 5-10 seeds on the buds i dusted
checked over all the buds, not a single extra seed outside the paint zone

My grandmother got me started with the paintbrush method some 45 years ago, it's the only way to go. People shouldn't fear pollin nearly as much as they do. First, when it's wet and fresh, it's quite a bit heavier than air and drops straight to the ground, unless there's a fan going. Later, when it's more dry, it can be blown around easier, but it still takes strong air movement.

agree 100% greengenes, been checking over my 2nd dusting, same results
only seeds where they were painted, didn't bother with spraying water this time, everything went just as well

Very true! I always forget to mention that when discussing pollinating...if it's fresh...just out of the "bananna", it's a lot easier to handle. I always dust fresh pollen, I lose a few seeds in the bud I'm dusting because it doesn't "spread" as well...but the good thing is...I don't get many if any stray seeds...because it doesn't spread as well.
