Poplar Police Chief Chad Hilde was arrested on drug charges Tuesday for allegedly growing marijuana plants in the barn near his rural Culbertson home.

Roosevelt County Sheriff's deputies arrested Hilde at his home, according to a news release. He is charged with one felony count of criminal production or manufacture of dangerous drugs, and one misdemeanor count of criminal possession of dangerous drugs.

Hilde was arraigned before Judge Bruce Waldhausen in Culbertson, and was released after posting $10,000 bond. A dispatcher at the Poplar Police Department said Monday that Hilde was on administrative leave. He faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted on the felony charge.

Poplar is a town of about 1,000 residents on the Fort Peck Indian Reservation.

An affidavit filed by acting Roosevelt County Attorney Steven Howard in Roosevelt County District Court on Tuesday morning provides more details into the allegations against Hilde.

A female runaway told Roosevelt County Sheriff's Deputy Matt Wallace on July 30 that Hilde had a marijuana plant growing in his barn, and that Hilde told her it was for medical purposes, according to an affidavit.

Later that day deputies went to Hilde's home north of Culbertson, where Hilde refused to allow them to search his barn, the affidavit states.

While deputies waited for a search warrant, Hilde showed them a copy of Kristopher Boyd's medical marijuana card and a form requesting that Terry Boyd become Kristofer Boyd's caregiver. Hilde's relationship to Kristofer and Terry Boyd, including why he had the documents, wasn't disclosed in court documents. Roosevelt County Sheriff Freedom Crawford said the Boyds weren't related to Hilde, but declined to elaborate on their relationship.

An official at the Montana State Division of Quality Assurance Licensure Bureau told Roosevelt County Criminal Investigator Tierra Erwin on July 30 that Hilde isn't licensed under the state's medical marijuana law as either a patient or caregiver, court documents state.

Erwin also learned that Terry Boyd isn't a medical marijuana patient or caregiver, and that Kristofer Boyd has a medical marijuana patient card, court documents state.

Deputies then executed a search warrant on Hilde's property, where deputies found eight marijuana plants growing, as well as marijuana seeds, and growing instructions and tools commonly used to grow and distribute marijuana, court documents state.

According to Montana law, licensed medical marijuana patients can grow their own marijuana — up to six plants — and possess up to one ounce of dried marijuana. Patients also can designate a caregiver to grow the marijuana for them.

In a separate case, Hilde still faces charges related to the alleged illegal killing of four moose on the Fort Peck Indian Reservation in July 2008.

For once, I hope the cop gets off. Or should he get a taste of what we go through. I'm confused.

I agree. . . very confusing. . . should he go to prison as karma would warrant, or should he get off like I would want other growers to?

Either way he's an ass for being a two-faced turd.

The guys a fuckin scumbag even if he does grow> Anyone who kills an innocent animal for eating his grow or not poaching is heartless were you shine bright lights in the animals eyes and cowardly shoot the animal, were all for looking after our crops but a moose is just an innocent animal. That's like a 250 pound man slapping a woman. not cool in my books.

They should roast that fucking pig with an apple in his mouth.

Throw the book @ him cuz this is a classic case of Quis custodiet ipsos custodes which is latin for WHO WILL WATCH THE WATCHMEN? Meaning whoever holds power can be corrupted. This pig is breaking the same laws that he vowed to enforce and on top of that he's a chief. Not a chief like me though ;)... I would normally say that he'd get off with a slap on the wrist but killing that moose is probably whats gonna F'em over. That's what he gets for breaking the #1 rule: Your grow is on a need to know basis and NOBODY needs to know. That little runnaway jezebel is what got his hands stuck in the cookie jar. Learn from this man's mistake people.

if he was poaching and the moose were not being aggressive then that is a shitty thing to do but if the moose was continually on his property then it was the right thing to do.

ever try to scare off a moose from food it likes? I bet not. Every made a moose really angry by shining bright light in it's face. no you havnt because if you did you would be dead, or you woulda had to shoot the f'in moose. moose are big dangerous, an generally aggressive animals. If they get over agressive you shoot a lot, if you wanna not get killed or hurt that is.

next step. eat it or donate it. dont waste it.

Not to sound too judgmental, but that Police Chief sounds like the usual crooked and hypocritical LEO who enforces the letter of the law on others, but feels somehow above the law himself -- growing herb AND poaching game, what an ass.

Even if he is a LEO, on general principle if I were on the jury for the cannabis charges, I would have to let him go, automatic not guilty. But on the unrelated charges of poaching, I think I would have to find him guilty, if only to provide an object lesson for the hypocrisy and above-the-law attitude. And if I knew he was involved in busting a lot of cannabis users, I would feel really conflicted about the not guilty verdict.

Cops that do not respect the law (they purport to uphold) are better off the streets, but no one should be penalized by the law for growing a plant. No one.

i second this notion..

did the cop, get his grow gear second hand from busting a Kat?
This is a strange one, he may have watered his girls and then gone off to work busting people..
we are all humans, hiding behind the badge sucks....
I am still praying for this world to wake up from its slumber, we could all be so much more than we are.
Stupid laws making people like us suffer, how many 'cops' go home and see Mary, its is just silly..
I have no answers, but this has made me think how many 'cops' are running ops in relative safety behind their badges.
hmmmmmm?

This story is a lot worse than most news stories are reporting. He took his 14 year old son onto a Native American Reservation to kill the moose. One was a bull and the other two were cows. The son-of-a-bitch knew that tribal police have no jurisdiction over him and broke several laws by killing them on tribal lands.

I hope they throw the book at the stupid bastard.
