damn man you got lucky.. that's exactly how grows burn down.
you should be using a good wire for the bulb. something like this stuff

http://homerenovations.about.com/od/electrical/a/artbxwire.htm

my entire grow is wired using BX wire just to prevent this type of stuff from happening.

Since a bulb's wiring will most likely be moving/not a permanent installation a solid conductor wire like BX would be a bad idea. What you want is flexible 600v rated cable, something like STOW.

That was a close one man. What happened, did a staple holding up the wire fall out or something? When did you catch it? Smoke alarms go off?

A great reason for arc fault/GFI receptacles and smoke alarms! It would have cut the power if the insulation got exposed and arced. I wonder...are there smoke alarms that can be used to cut power? Like those day/night things but instead of going off when the sun comes up...it cuts power if there's smoke. That should make a triple play of safety...arc fault, GFI, and a smoke alarm that cuts power.

That's one reason I prefer to grow outside...in an out building.

Sound like a good idea man don't know if it would put out a fire but i would hate to throw a bucket of water at a live wire. i'm shore some poor bastard did it:faint:
