What's new

My closet is 3' deep, 6' long, and 9' tall, what would be a good amount of watts?

My closet is 3' deep, 6' long, and 9' tall. It has a 1' square window near the ceiling for intake/outtake.

What would be a good amount of watts to utilize the full potential of this closet? I am planning on purchasing a digital ballast so I can use both MH and HPS bulbs. Definitely trying to keeping the noise to a discreet level as well.

If I use both bulbs, what would be a good ratio of MH watts to HPS watts?

Additionally, if I was to divide the 9' tall closet into a smaller mother/ clone room with a flowering room on top, how many feet of height should I give myself to work with in the mother/clone room, and how many feet of height should I give myself to work with in the flowering room?

Thanks for y'alls time, and Bom Shiva.

I'd say 1kw, or I'd maybe look at a dual 600w (Lumatek, and I thought Quantum had them - not sure if they're HPS/MH or just HPS).

With 9' of height I'd be aiming between 2'-3' for the mother/clone area. 2' is tough to squeeze in, but some PL-L's make that work, 3' obviously is more but then you're down to 6' in flower and if you're trying to push 1kw+ you might have heat issues with only 6' total (figure minus at least 2' from the top for the light - hood, distance to canopy, etc.)

I have 3 250's in a 2w x ~7l x ~5-6'h area. I'm putting another 250 in as soon as I get off my butt. i don't have much history with this area and these lights, since I've only had this area going since late April and dialing it in is gonna take getting through a few seasons, but I'm really liking the lights choice so far. I'm using some mod-scrogs and 2gal. dwc and hempy's to see what suits the room best. The scrogs are winning. YMMV

Depends on how you set it up. Probably 1200w as two 600w. If you went vertical you could do four 400w bulbs, in two stacks of two, or you could do two 1000w bulbs in vertical also. The more power you use, and the better you utilize the vertical space, the more bud you're going to get.

For the average person though, 1200w in 18sqft is going to produce some decent buds. You could get away with two 400w bulbs but you'll wish you went bigger.

Thanks so much for the responses. I am now look at 1200 as my target.

Maybe 1 600w HPS and 1 600w MH to cover my ass spectrum wise. I am planning on buying a new ballast. Can anyone recommend a digital ballast brand/model that both types of lights can plug into and is noise efficient (as quiet as possible)?

I have two that size, and I have 1200 watts in each. Two 600's work out great. If you can put the ballasts in another room, or just not in the closet then your temp would be golden. I have the lights air cooled with the ballasts in the closet, and right now in the summer the temps can get in the mid 80's for a little bit. This only lasts about a month. Like I said if you can put the ballasts somewhere else then you can pull a couple of lb's easy. I don't go for weight. I go for quality. So I really do not "use mine to it's fullist potential" I guess. I do use it to what i think it should be doing though. I hope this helps.

I forgot to add that if you are using MH you can not use air cooled hoods becuase the glass will negate the beneficial UVB effects of the MH light spectrum. I would just go two hps. They will not do you wrong. If you really wanted to you could do a 600 watt hps, and two 300 watt LED and then you would have cooler temps, and be covering all of your spectrums. Obviously this will cost more, but it would solve your problem. I am going to be trying this out soon. It just intrigues me so much. What is an extra couple of grand if you get your temps cooler, and your plants bushier?

I use all Lumitek Ballasts. I love them. I have six total, and back up just in case.
