Best way to filter intake to keep bugs out?

I was wondering what you guys do to filter your intake from outside to prevent bugs (spider mites, thrips, etc.) from getting inside?

Used pantyhose for over 15 yrs but it will restrict airflow , so an oversized fan is in order and it will not allow anything through..........

I like what the`s idea if yas got an old scrubber lyin around with a good pre-filter still on it.........

I also think they'll be a little defense in case of exhaust fan failure causing odor leaks from convection currents. They may be old, but they seem like they'd have enough left in them to scrub the very small flow from a fan failure. Not yet tested *fingers crossed*
