3'x3' closet/grow room candidate help

Hi!

I have a 3'x3' closet on the first floor of a 2 story house I was considering using for a grow room. The house sists on a slab, no basement.

I do not want to cut any holes in walls, ceiling or the door for ventilation, but want to keep the door shut to minimize light leakage. Some ight leakage is okay, as I do not have to hide it from the occupants of the house, but I do not want the excess light to be readily viewable from the outside.

I would be growing 2 WaterFarms under a 400W HPS.

I do have a 265 CFM Dayton blower available, too.

The closet has an 8' ceiling.

Ambient temps will be 65-70 degrees, Farenheit without the light's contribution to the heat.

Do you foresee a problem with lack of ventilation? I could possibly crack the door open a bit.

Suggestions?

I would build either a grow tent or cabinet in there to avoid light leakage for your ventilation and just leave the closet door open. If someone comes by, simply shut the door. You will also need a fresh air source. With a little ingenuity you can make them look like legitimate heat vents on the wall, which can heat your house in the winter. Unless of course you went with a sealed room (CO2, air conditioner, and dehumidifier) as JG has already suggested.

I run a vertical 150w HPS in an 18"x18"x24" I.D. homemade cabinet. An ~80 C.F.M. computer fan draws air through the 8 2" holes (2 on each wall), up through a cool tube, and out the top. Temps are ~78 lights on. This is a really cheap set up ~$100 providing you have the tools. Despite it's small size the actual growing area is around 9 sq.ft. 18"x18" on each wall. I could give you my design if you like.

The whole deal would easily fit your dimensions and stay cool if you open the closet door periodically. The price also includes the lamp/ballast/ bake-a-round if you put it together yourself. The walls are 1/2" plywood. Fully assembled weighs ~20lbs, which makes it very maneuverable especially if casters are used.

OrgAeroMan-

What does your house smell like? I can't even imagine growing one tiny plant with no odor control. That seems absolutely insane to me.

I can't say I've run a 400W in a closet (never anything that small), but I wouldn't guess you could cool that by simply opening the closet door a few times a day.

I don't understand all the concern over light leakage. Light is easy to stop, the odor is the real problem.

On what? If your main concern is smell, run a carbon scrubber, ozone generator, or some other smell controlling device. I'm in veg right now, so smell isn't an issue for me. By the way, not all plants smell like skunk, even in full flower. Besides, I said I run a 150w. To alleviate his heat concerns without venting through the wall I suggested he go with my set up, which can be cooled by opening the closet periodically. Certainly not his current 400w. I'm trying to give options, knowing what works for me. Get the facts before you break balls.

i had a 400 watter in a closet around that same size, and i gotta tell you, you are going to have some pretty insane heat issues if you dont exhaust it outside of the closet. you are going to have to keep the door open all the time, because the second you close it the temp is going to shoot up there. i tried it myself, but had to cut a hole in the ceiling and vent into the attic. hopefully everything works out for you.

I'm calling shenanigans on YOU. I don't think you've ever seen a plant in full flower.

Pfffff. Good one. If I could figure out how to show you my pics, I would. I have them in "my albums" but I can't, for the life of me, put them into my posts. Plants I can understand, computers I cannot. Well, hopefully I gave you some usable info Krusty, sorry about the pissing contest everyone.

No pissing contest. It's just very obvious you're giving advice from lack of experience.

I just wanted you to know it's obvious.

Stick with what you know when doling out advice

I know by experience that my set up works, and I've grown many a successful crop. Instead of doubting me, tell me how to get my pics from "my albums" to my posts and see for yourself. I don't feel like I have to prove myself to you, I would simply like to. Think what you will.

I'm only trying to help out our friend Krusty, but both you and I know you can't put a 400w in a 3x3 closet without proper ventilation or an AC, CO2 and dehumidifier. Even then, the AC throws off heat out the back and the back would need to be outside the grow area for any efficiency. So, I'm offering the only alternatives I can think of that I know work. I don't give any information I don't know from personal experience to be correct, which is why I haven't suggested water cooled light. I haven't used them and presume that the radiant heat would build to intolerable levels in a small enclosed environment anyway.

its not difficult at all to insert a picture into a response. on the regular reply page, not the quick reply, there is a little box you click that says insert picture. and then you pick what album and it inserts it as code into your reply box. hit reply, and then your picture is on. i checked your profile doesnt seem you have any albums, maybe thats the problem.

I do not know that. (and I don't agree with it)

Speak for yourself please.

Sorry dude but it's very obvious you are new and regurgitating info you read rather than experienced. My posts are a service to you.

Stick to what you know. Or, if relaying info you only read about, say so.

good luck on your grow.

Can't comment on the A/C, but basically plants need:
Light;
Water;
Air (to supply CO2);
Micronutrients from soil or hydroponic feed.

Unless you're going for a completely self contained environment (Which is still at the cutting edge of scientific research), your plants will need some kind of ventilation to provide fresh air.

AOD2012:My albums are on private. Is that the problem? I'll change it to public.

Pompey Monkey: Yeah the A/C I was talking about was for a sealed room setup with CO2 and dehumidifier.

what the: Why don't you try to contribute to the conversation instead of being such a toolsack? You obviously don't have any ideas so get bent.
