From a translation of "Words of the Week", by President Ikeda, published in the Seikyo Shimbun.

July 19th-25th, 2010
---- WORDS OF THE WEEK ----
Heading towards the ocean of a new phase of kosen-rufu, we continue together to advance victoriously, helping to raise as many capable and talented people as we can. Together with all of our priceless Future Division members, let's spend this summer developing and improving ourselves!
And let's always remember that an encouraging voice is always the most effective and powerful.

The writings of Nichiren Daishonin are a brilliant light of hope for humanity! They contain a truly profound philosophy for leading an ever victorious life. Even if it is only a line or two, try to make the effort to read the Gosho daily! By refreshing our spirits and minds each day, let's gear up to advance!

"When one person stands up based on the shared vow of mentor and disciple, two, three, and eventually a hundred like-minded people will follow. This is the eternal formula of kosen-rufu. As the Daishonin writes:

"At first only Nichiren chanted Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, but then two, three, and a hundred followed, chanting and teaching others. Propagation will unfold this way in the future as well. Does this not signify 'emerging from the earth'? (WND-1, 385)"

The summer holidays are here. And it's a good chance for us all to relax, refresh, and recharge our minds and bodies! At the same time it is also a great opportunity for us all to spend some meaningful and heart-warming time with our beloved family members and friends. Let's be very careful to look after our health and stay absolutely accident free throughout the summer!

"You must never think that any of the eighty thousand sacred teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha's lifetime or any of the Buddhas and bodhisattvas of the ten directions and three existences are outside yourself."

"A bird's egg contains nothing but liquid, yet by itself this develops into a beak, two eyes, and all the other parts, and the bird soars into the sky. We, too, are the eggs of ignorance, which are pitiful things, but when nurtured by the chanting of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, which is like the warmth of the mother bird, we develop the beak of the thirty-two features and the feathers of the eighty characteristics and are free to soar into the sky of the true aspect of all phenomena and the reality of all things."

"President Toda declared: 'We mustn't look down on ourselves. We are emissaries of the Buddha. We have been sent here by the Buddha. We are emanations of the Daishonin. Though we appear to be ordinary people, we are actually supremely noble and worthy of the highest respect.'

"In the early days of our movement, the Soka Gakkai was often derided by mean-spirited individuals as nothing more than a 'gathering of the poor and sick.' Mr. Toda urged that we pointedly retort: 'Well, just how many of the poor and sick have you helped, then?'

"A philosophy of real benefit is one that gives hope and inspiration to those in the depths of suffering and despair and guides them to happiness.

"For those who practise the Daishonin's Buddhism of the people, encountering baseless slander and abuse is a supreme badge of honour. That is why the more scornful and disparaging others have been, the more our members, proud of their mission, have burned with a passionate fighting spirit and ventured forth to encourage and support those who are suffering.

"Our members, noble Bodhisattvas of the Earth, have purposely taken on arduous struggles to overcome negative karma so that they can help or inspire those facing similar situations to courageously stand up and challenge their circumstances.

"'I am a Bodhisattva of the Earth!'--when we return to this eternal vow from time without beginning, we can change all negative karma into mission. Just as the rising sun paints the dark clouds in hues of gold, we can break through our sufferings and shine with the light of joy."

What a wonderful Gohonzon birthday present from my dear friend Bud! Today I started year thirty-eight. I'd give my right nut to have 38 more!

But each moment is the only moment and I just keep giving thanks for those continuing to come one at a time. So far, so good! For my children's sake and not my own, I pray that this continues!

But it is ever present in my mind that my mentor, Mr. Osaki, only lived one year longer than me so far. Longevity is relative! Devote your life to Kosen Rufu and it doesn't matter how long you're here, you will live in the Land of Eternally Tranquil Light.

I will never be able to repay my debt of gratitude for this, but I will keep trying!

Much love and deepest respect,

Thomas

"Becoming aware of one's identity as a Bodhisattva of the Earth is a fundamental awakening in the innermost depths of one's life, going far beyond ethnic, racial, or cultural identities. It opens the way to the most beautiful, profound, and powerful heart-to-heart network, breaking through all barriers and transcending all differences."

"They give their lives for shallow, worldly matters but rarely for the Buddha's precious teachings. Small wonder they do not attain Buddhahood."

"In the 'Teacher of the Law' (10th) chapter of the Lotus Sutra, Shakyamuni describes as follows the spirit of the bodhisattvas who will spread the Law in the evil age after his passing:

"'These people voluntarily relinquish the reward due them for their pure deeds and, in the time after I have passed into extinction, because they pity living beings, they are born in this evil world so they may broadly expound this sutra.' (LSOC10, 200 [LS10, 161-62])

"He indicates that they are outstanding bodhisattvas who, though having fulfilled their great vow and attained supreme enlightenment, voluntarily give up the reward for their pure deeds and, out of pity for living beings, are born in an evil age to propagate the Lotus Sutra.

"Shakyamuni then continues:

"'If one of these good men or good women in the time after I have passed into extinction is able to secretly expound the Lotus Sutra to one person, even one phrase of it, then you should know that he or she is the envoy of the Thus Come One [the Buddha]. He has been dispatched by the Thus Come One and carries out the Thus Come One's work.' (cf. LSOC10, 200 [LS10, 162])

"Anyone who teaches another person even a single phrase of the Lotus Sutra is an envoy of the Buddha and has been dispatched to carry out the Buddha's sacred work. This describes the efforts undertaken by the Bodhisattvas of the Earth who propagate the Lotus Sutra in the Latter Day of the Law.

"The Daishonin writes: 'I, Nichiren, humble person though I am, have received Shakyamuni Buddha's royal command and come to this country of Japan' (WND-1, 331).

"The Bodhisattvas of the Earth, motivated by their compassion for the people, appear by their own wish in the most challenging places, in the places where they are needed most.

"This is the great spirit of SGI members. We embody the lofty life-state of envoys of the Thus Come One, carrying out the mission to actualise the Buddha’s intent and decree."
