Smoking complaint

First off I don't grow in the house nor do I smoke in it, I do however have a fair amount of herbs in different vac sealed bags and jars within a air/waterproof bag which gets opened a few times a day. I got a message from the landlord saying that a neighbour complained about "pot smoke" not smell but smoke.. in the house over the weekend. He proceeded to threaten that if anyone complains again he will call the police to have them "interview" his tenants and find out who is responsible.

Is my landlord allowed to threaten and intimidate me/other tenants like this? I live in a huge house with only a couple of suites and I have seen other tenants who live here smoking joints outside. I am not worried about the police really .. I live in BC and the police are not interested in busting people for smoking pot even in public. What should I do?

I don't shit where I eat and I think I have been good at keeping business away from where I rest .. Should I just leave .. or try and make a big deal?

I'm pretty sure the cops won't bother interviewing tenants to find out who's smoking weed. I would just tell the landlord I don't smoke weed and I don't know what your talking about.

What's he going to do search your house .

Yeah I am pretty confident they have better things to do, I am more curious if my landlord is allowed to keep calling and leaving messages threatening to call the police? He has no proof that anyone smoked anything in the house other than complaints from another tenant. He shouldn't be saying anything unless he has some proof .. Should I call the residential tenancy branch and ask them? He is old and I think him threatening to call the police just shows that he doesn't know what he is doing... that's the last thing I would do if I were in his shoes.

You should make your "anti-mj" stance clear to the landlord. Doesn't the neighbor who complained have another neighbor on the other side who who could have lit up?
Lol I remember my landlord came knocking to my door on unrelated business and dropped a line about "horrible people in the neighborhood who smoke dope" I proceeded to agree with her and added "yeah, you don't want those horrible dope fiends to find out where you live, since you never know what that evil plant will make them do" Never heard another mention of mj for 4 years since and we do communicate often.

Unfortunately for you a few bad apples ruin the bunch. You may well be busted by others careless smoking habits. Worse yet those bad apples might point the finger directly at you.

Granted I'm an American, but I'd tell him people have rights in thier home; and what-ever who does or wants to do is none of his business and common sense tells you, you do not want to agree with, or side with the landlord in this matter

Down here we have this mantra: Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.

It's kinda akin to "Somewhere Over the Rainbow"
- ya know with high rent and taxes thrown in! lol

Being in a medical marajuana state - I could casually mention some people use "that stuff" for pain or illness.

Landlords - some think they are god.

Lot's of good points .. If I wasn't growing pot elsewhere/have some stash at this place/have friends over to check out the product I would have already told him to mind his own fucking business. I thought it was really strange that he threatened the police and its making me paranoid that maybe he knows more than I think and he said that to let me know that he knows.

Where I live you can smoke walking down the street so unless he lives under a rock (he is old/super straight) he would know that the police would never waste time interviewing anyone about using drugs. I am going to wait a week or two and give my notice.. I am going to tell him that I don't feel comfortable living somewhere where the landlord threatens his tenants with police. Plenty of other options available. I am also going to ask some other tenants if he threatened them with the police thing.. if he threatened everyone with the police I won't be so worried.

Moving out is the best thing you could do. Most landlords are assholes. Vote with your feet.

I do not know about your housing market, but real estate is VERY cheap where I live because of the crash (thank you yuppies who bought houses you could not afford- your financial mismanagement and loan defaults finally made owning a house affordable again!).

Check around for a small house and mortgage. You will be surprised what you find.

Then, no more landlords ever!
