Orrrr, it's not illegal to rub one out in the "privacy" of your own backyard is it?
.

not sure whether this violates the "no comments about shooting stuff at the choppers" clause in this thread. ;)

Nomaad in military I was in radar operative centre and can say to most used choppers are Bell's, especially model 212.
Not big not small, can be adapted for 0-3-6 travelers depends of use.
It can land almost everywhere.
Kids with 15-20 days of tractice can learn how to fly.

Well, min flying limit does not exist (not when I was in army), not for wild area.
In the cities exist, but all that depends from town to town and they got instructions if come to that limit.
In my country its called short BOV and BOM, stations on the ground, who recieve datas about plane is that military or civil ... signal about aircraft number and model etc is sent each time when you see that blinking light on aircraft or chopper.

Here we got searching in areas around water (lake, river etc) but up in the hills nobody search.
So run of water and you got 50% chance to have successful harvest.Ofc, they do not search around really small creek's.
Here, they do not invest so much in that way of searching so cameras are not well quality and they fly "fast".
Now, all that records they watch in office and if they found serious grow or big suspicious place thay back with chopper or send car patrol.

Twice in the year they fly.First time in May and second in August.
If you take a look newspapers from here you can find only busting near to the water source.

Can't say what equipment they have up there and what tactic they use but here Im on my own :D

generally if they are flying under 500' its a crime. could be less around livestock. getting it on video seriously helps. usually they will come in the early season and spot with little planes. then they come back in august with planes and choppers and ground crews till mid sept or so. spotting choppers with no id numbers, jet black flying really low are the norm in nor-cal.. ive seen hueys, and little teardrops in black. and three years ago saw two apache's bieng used along with the crews. the spotter planes all usually have id#'s on the side.
the blue and white chopper with id#'s is PG&E (checking lines)and there used to be a lime green one used by the timber companies(looking for patches).
i encourage folks to chime in on their experiences in their areas, as well as to report any sightings... thanks

Im guessing they flying in May cause its easily to spot cleaned places.
In August plants are tall and bushy, so can saw clean and "naked" land.

One more, here police "works" with hunters ...
They visit each hunters group/association and give them pictures of Cannabis plants.
... most of local hunters love my joints.

Thats not so big money, they can got more to keep mouth closed + cold beer :)

Found on Yahoo answers, but I saw the same citation elsewhere:

"Flight rules "laws" are the same for all stares, It is federal law that applys.

§ 91.119 Minimum safe altitudes: General.

Except when necessary for takeoff or landing, no person may operate an aircraft below the following altitudes:

(a) Anywhere. An altitude allowing, if a power unit fails, an emergency landing without undue hazard to persons or property on the surface.

(b) Over congested areas. Over any congested area of a city, town, or settlement, or over any open air assembly of persons, an altitude of 1,000 feet above the highest obstacle within a horizontal radius of 2,000 feet of the aircraft.

(c) Over other than congested areas. An altitude of 500 feet above the surface, except over open water or sparsely populated areas. In those cases, the aircraft may not be operated closer than 500 feet to any person, vessel, vehicle, or structure.

(d) Helicopters. Helicopters may be operated at less than the minimums prescribed in paragraph (b) or (c) of this section if the operation is conducted without hazard to persons or property on the surface. In addition, each person operating a helicopter shall comply with any routes or altitudes specifically prescribed for helicopters by the Administrator.

Here is the "gotcha"
§ 91.13 Careless or reckless operation.

(a) Aircraft operations for the purpose of air navigation. No person may operate an aircraft in a careless or reckless manner so as to endanger the life or property of another.

(b) Aircraft operations other than for the purpose of air navigation. No person may operate an aircraft, other than for the purpose of air navigation, on any part of the surface of an airport used by aircraft for air commerce (including areas used by those aircraft for receiving or discharging persons or cargo), in a careless or reckless manner so as to endanger the life or property of another.

ANOTHER INTERESTING TIDBIT.. perhaps they are flying under the other traffic (if you are close to an airport.)

§ 91.126 Operating on or in the vicinity of an airport in Class G airspace.

<snip>
(2) Each pilot of a helicopter or a powered parachute must avoid the flow of fixed-wing aircraft."

I got a nice long hover over my house today, they had more then enough time to do what they do.The chopper was White with blue and red lines. I was unable to scope them with my binos. It was no coast gaurd chopper that is for sure. They fled when I stuck my head out the window to see what the noise was. Alot of activity today in the 805 for sure. This kind of stuff troubles my thoughts...

I hope they like my plants... :tiphat:
