Defoliation: Hi-Yield Technique?

I have a micro grow currently in which I am doing not just defoliation but also root trimming...I have managed large yields with small plants in small spaces...defoliation works awesome if done proper and I've been doing it for over 25 years now...I increase yield, decrease likelihood of pests and fill up my space without supercropping or training...although these particular ones...recently defoliated...have also been trained during veg which I maintained for 10 weeks...everything is strictly under flourescent light throughout grow...have found that although bud growth is greater in HID lighting.. the heat is a give away and the overall end result may have more trichromes but they are not anymore potent in context...fewer tri stalks just means slightly more to smoke but eliminates cooling and electricity cost issues in small grows....these are 7 self developed F3 ploants I call coffee kush...they are a connisseur strain and require 10 to 11 weeks to fully mature and bring out the flavours/scents of the terpenes but well worth it...the tallest one currently is 15.2 inches and is not an auto strain...I have done root pruning to limit height in addition to limiting pot size...the buds at this point will stretch and swell an additional 2 to 3 inches from their current appearance and popcorns will turn into nuggets or continyue climbing/growing into the central bud with extreme orange/brown hairs before and after harvesting/curing. I have always defoliated as leaves are leaves and the tiny leaves in the buds work as well but remain covered in crystal...also...it was mentioned earlier (probably 30 pages back) that because of the pistils and eventually trichrome heads light would not be evenly dispersed over the available stomata of the plant leaves..this is incorrect if you refer to physics of a sort...pistils early in formation and trichromes in early maturing stages are almost translucent, yet they maintain a cylindrical shape of sorts. This feature hypothetically infers a natural genetic enhancement to the plant itself in the fact that light refracts through curvatures usually causing an amplification of the spectrums known...essentially temporarily speeding up the metabolism of the plant and therefore equating to an increase in growth...

Trimming = unevolved DNA for indoor growing

Trimming = unevolved DNA for indoor growing

Fan leaves are launch pads and fuel for shaded tops.

When indoors we have removed a plant with deterministic reactions based on lighting and introduced it into a smaller environment. Since this situation is not in the evolved code of the DNA we help it drop its 'node lengtheners' when necessary.

The current code in plants tells it that when the environment is restricted to enlarge itself by shooting through the bush. In our environment it is better to drop fan leaves to maximize the skeletal system in both the horizontal and vertical plane to gather more light. The structure is necessary due to squared light loss at double the distance from the light source which is not a concern outdoors.

With a small crowded sea of green system some plants over grow others and it is natural to take off a big fan leave here and there. Some plants get topped, some bent over, some all fan leaves taken off. Over a cycle or two it is clear that gettling light to the tops and leaving enough leaf for it to keep growing keeps the nodes within reasonable distance.

can be done with anything!

While it CAN be done with anything it's better to do with clones, plants which you've grown out previously. This way you'd know their 'normal' growth characteristics and would be able to compare the efficacy of defoliating vs. not defoliating. If you have no baseline for comparison then your yields might be suffering and you'd never know it since not all plants respond well to this sort of thing.

Hi all I've been lurking since the thread was started.
At first I was a bit skeptical so I decided to put that aside and give the defoliation technique a go on 2 plants.

Same age,same strain ect. ect.

One is unclipped one is clipped twice so far and both have 4 weeks left.

It's hard to tell from the pics but the defoliated plant seems to have the edge over the other plant so far.

Both are grown from seed but the results so far have convinced me to repeat the process with clones when the tent is freed up.

Great thread and thanks to all involved.

When you all do your trimming, do you trim them all, like once a week or do you trim them all once really good and then just maintain them by trimming as needed and ongoing? I trimmed mine 3 times so far, about week 5/6 of veg and they recover faster everyt ime, about to go into flower. Thanks

here's one i whacked tonight. it's sitting in a 5 gal bucket of water till i can trim it tomorrow.

this plant was severely defoliated at day 21 flower.

it will certainly dry over 10, it's a big plant.

buds are hard and dense. even the small lower buds are the size of golf balls and hard.

So I too, have been watching this thread and have been defoliating 4 plants for the last 3 weeks. I flipped the lights on the 3rd so I will defoliate when needed as the buds appear.:dance013::smoweed:Its been a week since I pinched them.I notice a lot more branching than previous plants. They were veged for 4 weeks.

here is a quick pic as promised. 11 ladies in there(all select keeper clones). 2 querkle, 2 sour bubble bx3, and 7 chemdawg d bx1(thank you Rez). defoliated around flower day 25-28 for first time ever in a 5-6 year career and they are now around flower day 33. I was running these plants under 1200w and now after defoliating they fit under a 600(one side of tent), how is that for increasing yield?!?! lol I can now fit double the plants in there. Also for this grow I do not need the portable ac now, the house ac keeps it low enough as you can see in the pic if you have a good eye. so no matter what I have doubled my yield if I had the other side filled with same amount of plants. Now that I have a good grasp on these nutrients I should also have one of my best grows yet. anyways just checking in and saying whats up to all my IC fam. Peace smoke and respect

I admit it seems there are something to learn here.I am an old school grower,"Dont pick the leaves, they are the factories that produce food to the plant".That may be,but here we talk about maxing the crop as much as possible to get most BUD,and it seems it would be wise to keep an ear to the ground, and an open mind.I will try this on my plants(or at least on some of them,we dont wanna go too fast here..lol!)
Thank you man.

My only reservation is,what about plants that are prone to be hermies, wont they go into full Drag when you do this?:)

ive done this with the chemd clone a few times, and i got zero hermies as a result - just full blown sensimellia.

sumdumguy, thank you!

weird jimmy, that plant does look like something out of "lord of the rings". i'm keeping a copy of that, thank you!
