ITryToGrow Tries to grow

Hey ITryToGrow, finally am responding I'm sorry there has been more to do than expected!

Hey dude! No worries, you do your thing and when you have the time to give some feedback it's always appreciated!

Looking at the diagrams, alt 1 could hold 400w of canopy, alt 2 could hold 800w and alt 3 could hold 2000w.

Hmm, maybe you misinterpret the different alternatives:

Alt.1: 76 Gal total.
Alt.2: 94 Gal total.
Alt.3: 100 Gal total.

If it's 50 Gal per 1000W, shouldn't alt.1 hold ~1500W, alt.2 ~1900W and alt.3 2000W.

Or am I missing something in the equation? Like maybe for some reason the water in the butt doesn't count? :)

I didn't put it in there specifically, but the tanks will be auto top-off via floatvalves.

...
If you get a medium/big chiller than the 100gal version will support a 2000w canopy with a top off of RO water from the water butt. Unless you have a tds controller it is dangerous to top off with nutrient solution as the plants eat and drink at different levels throughout their lives. I have found letting the tds go from 1400-1100 by having the RO top off the res using a float valve before I topped off with nutes does well:)

Ok, check! :)

Thanks man

Bingo! The chiller doesn't have the ability to cool the water in the water butt and so when you only have 18 or 36 gallons the chiller will have to work harder than if the water was contained in the res.

The way to do it!

Maybe my thinking was wrong then, cause I figured that since the ladies when they are fully grown only drink about 6 gallons per 24 hour period (3 gallons per tank); I figured that a small tank and small chiller would mean that the chiller wouldn't have to work as much.

Oh yeah, the water butt would be situated outside the tent, so the water in the butt (hehe) would not be as warm as the water in the tanks, thus not needing to be chilled.

Another thing that I think should be taken into consideration is the fact that I haven't been able to add humidity which I think makes them drink more to compensate.

What do you think? :)

Cheers

If your setup only consumes 6 gallons a day I would say a smaller or medium chiller would do just fine. I was thinking of the res filling 30% a day with ambient temp top off which would overwork a small chiller.

It's all about taking general concepts and applying them to individual circumstances. Any of those setups now look like they are viable, it is a question now of what you think will be the best.

Personally I like to keep it simple and so one res, whether 100gallons or 36, would mean less fittings and pumps? than if you had multiple 18 gallon tanks.

So a 58gal water tank filled with RO will be topping off a 36gallon res. With the res out of the room this will work.

Cheers!

Yeah, as far as equipment goes I basically have what I need regardless of which alt I choose.

And what I don't have won't be $$$.

Only thing expensive that I don't have is the tank for alt.3, 100 gal one. And it's about $120 with cover.

I'm gonna sit down and figure which is the best choice

The tank (water butt) will be out of the room, the res' will be in the tent. :)

I would go for alt 2 except instead of two 18 gallon tanks, have one 36 gallon to help the chiller evenly cool all the water.

Good one dude! Never thought about that...

Any ideas of a place that sells tanks/res' in different shapes and sizes?

Well the local hydro stores should sell 40 or 50 gallon res' for around $60. For about $50 you can get

Or for $80

Unfortunately my local hydro stores suck big-time, I get 99% of my stuff from overseas.

There's one caveat when it comes to the to-be-36 gallon tank, it has certain restraints since the tables have to "stand" partially on it:

Not the best picture but I think you get the general idea.

Another thing is that I'll most likely change grow-site in about 6 months, so I don't want to spend to much $$$ since it's unlikely I will be able to use it after the move (moving to a smaller place) :(

More on that later.

Ok, here's some pics from my latest visit:

I changed the lighting schedule for the ad hoc moms, and BOY did they like that! I went from 18/6 to 20/4:

They will without a doubt provide me with the # of clones I need for next run AND some real mothers.

The 24 are growing wild as well:

You have no idea how stoked I am about them, it's an experiment that's gonna be REALLY interesting! :dance013:

Cheers!

Those ladies look real healthy bro, they will make some nice cuttings. Having really healthy lush cuttings always makes a grow go smoother I feel.

Thanks Raph! Howsit on your end? With the move and all?

Things are progressing well, got my RO system hooked up and am finishing one of the 4x4 stands today and will have 60 Blue Dream going into the tray this week under 1000w.

I agree, stress free mothers give quicker rooting clones that acclimate quicker to HID lighting.

Thanks, I'm kinda surprised that they look this good actually, but I'm totally happy about it.

I think I chose the right phenos from the batch I had.

Nice, you're gonna have to share that DNA with me some day! ;)

nice grow there! things seem to be coming along nicely...
enjoy your hard work and take care.

Thanks man! Yeah, for once I feel like everything is going my way!

Cheers y'all!

Are the vertical bulbs burning your ladies?

Yes, they are. Pretty bad too... :(

Lesson learned till next time I guess.

Gonna surround the cooltubes with chicken-wire-net (sp?) so that they can't reach the glass. I've also bought a stronger fan for them (the tubes).

That's probably the reason why they have been showing signs of heatstress, not due to the ambient temps, but to the fact the they have been "burning". :)

Cheers!
