veggin under fluoros

i kept a northern light plant under minimal fluoros for 3 months(was intended as a mother, tried to give it the last light possible cause i wanted it to stay small) and when i put her ubder 400 hps she took off like a bat out of hell...from what i've read it really shocked me how this thing grew..this round i'm gonna try a bunch of em that way and see what happens..what is yer experience with this?

Why is this in the organic thread?

i always use floros to start, than when the plant establishes a nice structure i throw it under HPS. The stronger the light, the better the growth(up until a certain point). If you have a pretty bushy plant the HPs will help because of penetrating light. I typically find it a waste to put small plants under HID though, i dont notice a big difference.

Because the OP doesn't have anything to do with organics.

If I understand correctly, 1 Northern Lights plant was vegged under CFLs and then moved to HPS to flower.

I guess I don't understand the mystery. Your plant will grow as fast as it can. If you have it under CFLs it will do ok, if you move it to HID it will grow better. You could notice a similar increase in growth if you went from a 250W HID to a 1000W HID.

Northern Lights is known to be a vigorous plant anyway.

Hmm, yah I'm not sure what you mean here?

You're surprised your plant grew quickly under high intensity lighting?

Are you growing organically?

thanks for yer response etinarcadiaego...yes i am growin organically..i learned how to grow right here..certain members of icmag who's opinion i desire only post here in the organic forum. thats why i posted here..have always read that you need hid lights for plants to veg right...the plant didnt look like much and yes i am surprised at how well it is doin..i've got a 3x4 box with a 400 vertical hps and supplemental 4ft fluoros (blue light)that lay across the top of the box..the plant is so big i have to tie a branch or 2 down every day or so..i seen in your sig that you grew some skunk#1 x northern lights..in my last grow i crossed skunk#1 x nl and i now have those seedlings in cups..very curious how they will turn out..also grew a skunk#1 female....gonna check out yer grow..

.have always read that you need hid lights for plants to veg right...the plant didnt look like much and yes i am surprised at how well it is doin..i've got a 3x4 box with a 400 vertical hps and supplemental 4ft fluoros (blue light)that lay across the top of the box..the plant is so big i have to tie a branch or 2 down every day or so..

Wow, sounds like a nice setup man!

I don't believe you need HIDs to veg a plant well, as long as you provide an ideal environment and "enough" lighting you'll do well. I vegged under some CFLs once maybe 2-3 years ago and noticed EXCELLENT internodal spacing, ever since then I've been thinking about trying it again.

In fact I just started vegging under flouros about a month ago, I bought one of those 8 light 2' High Output T5 deals, and the plants really seem to love it. It's just nice to not have to worry about dealing with the excess heat, so I keep my clones/moms under the T5 and I noticed I don't have to water as often, don't have to pay them as much attention and they still seem just as healthy and happy. How far did you keep your CFLs from your Mom?

I'd love to see some pics of your ladies if you ever get a chance :)

e,i didnt use the compacts..used 4 foot long fluoros, and kept them an inch ot 2 from top of plant..like i said, initially,i didnt intend to flower this plant and gave it very little light..things changed and i had to put it in flower under hps...guess why i'm surprised at growth is that i've never vegged a plant for 90 days..it's usually been a couple weeks(clones)...but this batch i was dealin with seeds for the 1st time.....i read yer grow threads..thanks,because i'm growin skunk#1 and skunk#1 x northern lights(seeds that i made)this round and dont know nothin about it..before now everything had been northern light clones but i got bored and decided to try somethin different..

Right on man. I'm using 2 foot long flouros myself, really love 'em for vegging.

You using grow tubes or?

90 days of veg, wow man that's awesome. I just vegged a Sour D IBL almost that long from seed and it seemed to switch SO much faster.

I really loved the SkXNL and the S#1, they were great plants. In my case the SK X NL LOVED the nutes, couldn't get enough, particularly a humic acid supplement maded by Bio-Bizz called Bio-Heaven. Both responded better than average to Guano teas (1-10-0) and fattened up during the 3 weeks following the tea.

Good luck with your plants, I would love to see some photos!

I am all about vegging under HID instead of floros. There is a fine line between too early where they will suffer because of it or benefit in my opinion. But I like to do it as soon as I can get away with because I notice more fan leaf surface area when I do it. Try it both ways for yourself and decide, you could also have better floros then I have so it isn't much of a difference.

primary thing i dont like about hid is the heat in summertime..would be excellent in winter..
