400W MH in relativley small grow space

Hey folks, Im vegging three plants in a small closet, dimensions are around 3ftx3ftx8ft. Plants were transplanted from a window sill box at about 6wks old. Now in individual 5ltr pots.
I tried to keep my lamp (a 400W MH) as close as possible at first as I was afraid of them stretching too mch but I damaged some of the top canopy with a sort of "bleaching" of the leaves (mostly in patches, a few bleached out leaves) but no burning or charring.
I've been misting them as often and possible and raised the lamp pretty much to the top of my cabinet. Just need a few pointers for maxing out the lumens/ft vs damaging my babies! I've got a small desk fan blowing over the canopy all the time now I don't know if I should be doing anything else?...Cheers!

sounds good! how far is the light from the tops? the bleaching might be a nutrient need..any pics

Keep it about 7" away...good ventilation...don't mist. The damage won't go away...but there shouldn't be more.

I would change the 400 MH for 3 CFL each one of 100 W. I can guarantee you'll get better results.
I was using some 400 MH and when i've changed for the CFL the internodes were very close and the plants haven't stretched at all. It was very very compact
The stems were much more thicker. It's something unbelievable. The size of the leaves was something, i'd say, bizzare. Trust me. Change your light for some CFLs and you won't repent. I have been told for a friend the benefits of the CFL and when i've changed i got stoked. I Changed my 400 mh for 3 cfls of each of 105 w.
