Ceramic Metal Halide (CMH)

He was being quite a helpful chap and went out of his way to shoot me a link.

It was the same information I had found while digging around the wibble.
It seems that the 400w pulse start halide ballasts have ansi codes of the following. M155, M135, and M135/M155. The standard core and coil halide
ballasts are probe start.

There is something odd about all of that. I looked at the data for my m135
and I believe it has the same components as the m155 (which is what
is listed on the spec sheet for the bulb I ordered).

The only pulse start ballasts that will work with a CMH is the 150 watt and less. The 400 requires a magnetic core S51

here, some of which are designed to operate with pulse start MH ballasts,
and clearly listed on their spec sheets. Some of them are not open rated.
(the one I ordered is)

I'm definitely not making this up or trying to rock the boat.
They are not "retro white", but they are Phillips MasterColor cmh bulbs.

The pulse start cmh bulbs which are 150w and under will fire with
pulse start or electronic ballasts. The 250w and 400w pulse start bulbs
will not work with electronic/digital, and must use pulse start ballasts.

Hey there people. I tried searching but got no joy sorry. I wondered with the Philips Master Color, are the vertical and horizontal bulbs the same? Reason I ask is because they wont fit in my cooltubes and the only other shades I have are vertical (obviously I ordered the horizontal bulbs). Will they be alright?

Yeah, we haven't talked much about the higher wattage Pulse Start CMH bulbs here because most growers have HPS gear hanging around and there are less ANSI designations to cloud the air when it comes to HPS. Makes it just a bulb swap. However, if someone has a Magnetic PSMH ballast there is almost always a CMH that they can obtain to match.

Just to clarify a little more on the topic of digital/electronic ballasts. There are digitals available for all wattages of CMH. Above 150w they are harder to find as most are too high of a frequency.

I have a 3k 150w Philips CMH running on a MetroLight 150w digital/electronic ballast. It is at the absolute top end of the acceptable frequency band for CMH bulbs. It is around 400hz and a nice square wave (needed for CMH) on the output. SunPark makes them up to 150w @ 150hz and Hatch, Advance and some others do as well. Remember, the key is a square wave form output between 60hz and 400hz.

I also have an ARO Electronic 150/175w halide ballast hanging around that outputs at like 200khz or something crazy. This would be a disaster with a CMH, but runs Venture Uni-Form Halides like a dream.

Hello all,

I just ordered a htg 150 hps grow light with ballast/bulb/reflecor (the eco special) for my next upgrade.

I looked at this bulb supplier and this is what I found:

will this bulb fit the bill CDM150/U/PS/4K/ALTO?

Or do I need a pulse start metal halide ballast?

minds_I - You are going to need a Pulse Start Metal Halide ballast for that bulb. A great bulb though.

i think many are now universal but some are still orientation
specific, it should say on the packaging if you still have it and
if not, there should be some numbers on the bulb you can use
to research that particular bulb.

if it is orientation specific, it may be dangerous to position
it improperly so do the research and be safe bro.

i can't say with absolute certainty because my order
hasn't arrived yet but i ordered a bulb and an S-51 ballast
kit just the other day and within a day i'd received e-mail
notification that the shipping process had been initiated,
unfortunately, there is a holiday this week so i'm not
expecting
delivery until mid to late next week.

assuming things go as they seem to be going, i'll be
a happy camper rockin' a 400 Retro White in my little
micro-cab very soon! (lol, and some new Air-Pots too!)

btw, the standard way to pay there is thru pay-pal
which gives you someone to bitch to if the deal goes
sour.

I wasn't too happy but they sent a long-term special email offer to their customers.
I'll most likely buy there again (maybe).

I got my 400 CMH bulb in 2005. It was ...quick, fast and in a hurry...then..still using same bulb...today....it came pre-burned..

I will need another bulb, soon...for another light fixture...I hope their ready for that..
