Question about cabinet lighting.

Why not just buy a few spiral cfls and a few light sockets?

2 6500k 26watt CFL for $10 at walmart. Plastic light sockets are $2 at lowes. 2700k CFL lights are cheaper than 6500k.

They would light the cab. Take off the plastic lenses. I don't think you will be happy with the results 13 watts each isn't very much. Perfect for cloning though. $60.00 for 39 watts of light. I think you can do better.

you'd be better off rockin spiral CFLs, man. cheaper and you'll get more wattage. aim for around 100 (more preferably, but you start to run into heat problems with spiral CFLs the more lights you add) watts.

for this price i can grab
3 40w 2700k cfls($30)
4 26w 6500k cfls($16)
7 sockets ($14)

and thats 224w. :chin:

If you are looking for something you can just buy that will fit and work(without having to wire/buy sockets etc as all the other people have mentioned :) You would be a million times better off going with something like http://www.htgsupply.com/viewproduct.asp?productID=51907. The fixture has high-output bulbs, 10k lumens which is probably 5x or 10x the amount of lumens each of those 13w ones put out. Much more cost effective as well for what you get.

I went the wiring/buying sockets/spiral CFLs route with my grow because I found it to be the most cost effective for my space, but your mileage may vary.

I actually have not issues with doing wiring... I simply look at the bars and they are small(don't take verticle high) and they spread the light out evenly.

However i do agree that 13 watts is tiny, ill just buy some cfls and wire them i guess.
-off the to home depot.
Ima have to throw about 4 plants in there while i am gone for the next three weeks, do you think they will all die if they hit the lights while i am gone?

depends on how hot it is. perhaps not death, but it will not have a positive effect on the growth of your plant.

T5's work great for the entire grow cycle, little to no heat so you can grow really close to them, nice bright light spread over a good range. For flowering they might be a little weak to pack on the buds unless you get a bunch in there, but for veg they work wonderfully.

K, I went by the hydroponic store and picked out a 200 and something watt t5 grow light setup, I am still not set on the idea. I really wish to grow in a garbage can with like a 400watt hps or something, but it would not look stealthy to have a garbage can in my room.

hey bro, you really should check out PLL's like big twinn
said, they are perfect for your application.

picture a 4 foot T5 but folded in half, actually the 55's
are 21 inch's long. what they are are remote ballasted
CFL's.

here, here's a couple pics of a box of mine and a link to
a complete discussion on the topic with many, many who
are using these bulbs to great effect.

https://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=132787

btw, in that thread you will find links where you can
buy the ballast, bulbs and sockets along with complete
wiring info. a set-up, with ballast, bulbs and sockets
running 200watts (4x 50watters) will run you about a
hundred.

another nice thing about them is that, because you're
using multiple bulbs it's easy to tweak the spectra of
light you give your plants.

(they also run cool enough so your plants can actually
grow right up to the bulb, even touching it won't burn
unless you leave it touching for long periods.)
