ebay, speed controller, $25 shipped
i have 5 of those, they are garbage (albeit the standard). also, if stealth is a priority, they're too loud. However, it's still much safer to use one of those (triac), than a dimmer switch.
how is it garbage??
Is it cheap costing? Yes
Does it do exactly what it's supposed to? Yes
Does spending $80 on a "pro grower speed controller" do anything different? Hell NO!
Mines been working for over a year wonderfully, maybe you've had 5 go out on you? I mean they're garbage yet you bought 5?

If you need a vortex that doesn't hum loudly, then NO, it does NOT get the job done.
$65 shipped. Also, it is not a "pro grower speed controller". It is an AC motor speed controller, which the triac is NOT. The variac is the right tool for the job. This is undisputable (see link).
Glad yours are working for you. I didn't have any go out. Bought 5 at once. Turned around and bought 5 variacs a week later.

I run 4kw rooms, 600w lights, bare bulb.
I use 8 " fans and filters ( phat filters 600mm * 200 mm ). About 700 m/2 seems minimum for this wattage, ive tried less and ive had humidity issues ( bud rot !!!!). Ive tried more - 1000m/2 - Perfect for my rooms, but un do able in my houses
For the smell, you cant go without. In my early days i grew without a filter, and it was obvious lol. My sister told me the 1st time she came round. You get used to the smell and think its all OK, the neighbours DONT
Get a scrubber, 600 - 1000 m/2 for your wattage, no smell and essential ( if you dont like prison lol)
Ps this is with UK temps etc
