Invasive Species: We're in Trouble!!

I just got back from my annual bass fishing vacation in Florida where its hard to miss the natural disaster thats occurring there. The state and much of its nature are being overwhelmed by animals and plants that people have brought in as pets or landscape plants and then turned loose. The catfish people buy to clean their aquariums grow to 3' or a meter long when you dump them in a lake, and they suck up every native fish egg around. That African Rock Python that was turned loose might grow to weigh 200lbs, and just might scare the &!*$@ crap out of a bass fisherman and cause him to break his new $200 graphite rod trying to get away from the big fuker?!!#&@%!!

Then i get back home and the Kudzu vine, brought in by strip miners had overgrown my plants and dragged them to the ground.

Silver leaf maples, ferrel hogs, killer bees, asian carp, snakeheads, armored catfish, kudzu vine....good god our nation has been ruined by letting this kind of stuff loose. We can never pull them back or get rid of them and they are destroying our enviroment.... or at least theyre destroying my enviroment.

Kudzu is no joke. If you stare long enough you can literally see it grow.

Wild hemp in the midwest is at least pleasing to the eyes.

Many things have not been "released" by people. They were simply the result of our demands for foreign products. It seems to me that lots of invasive flora and fauna were brought in on Container Ships, and have been for years. Either attached to the hulls or on board with the cargo.

You pack some bananas in Ecuador. Mixed into the bananas is a spider that did not die, when exposed to the fungicide and pesticide. Now this super spider is pregnant and gives birth. Woohooo.....new invasive super spider, outside of it's ecosystem, with limiting factors that are way higher, and no natural predators.

People do bring things in and release them as well.

It's quite a mess. It's rare to see a native and natural habitat. Enjoy it when you do.

that sucks about he animals. there was a dirty jobs episode where he was catching feral chickens around miami. i think he said there were 100,000 of them!

i saw something about some people trying to make the kudzu into biofuel. kudzunol i think they were calling it. it would be good for the south. its everywhere!

Is that this years growth s13sr20? ha ha ha

Yep, thats it . People scoff when i state the "set and forget" isnt possible around here. One day the plants fine, a week later you have to try and find it in a spot that looks just like your picture.

I would love to live in a place where I had to worry about 200lb snakes on fishing trips...

You don't have to worry about that shit at all down here, if you live near the everglades maybe worry for your dog or cat, plus as someone mentioned this last winter really put the hurting on a lot of the non-native reptile and fish species.

Yes, the real problem is people. Primarily people that dont live in or have a connection to the enviroment. In the same way that some pencil necked accountants decided it was a good idea to grind up dead cattle and feed them to living cattle= Mad Cow Disease, there are those that cant fathom that any problem could develop from inserting a few different animals into the enviroment. Hell, we'll just eat them!

anybody for some tasty snakehead salad?

rambone, buddy i grew up in snake country, but when i came eye to eye with the bastard that caused me to break my new rod, i knew right away that this thing out wieghed me by 50 lbs and must have been 12' long.

Last year, I saw a snake chase down a 5' alligator, squeezed it and then swallowed the thing. Hell, im only 5'10. This wasnt no garter snake.

There harmless about like the gators. They never bother anybody,, not unless theyre 15' long and wiegh a half a ton.... and then i think you look tasty as hell. Ill wade and cast where there are small gators, but im a little shy of the big ones. Their behavior is very different than the small ones.

d.s. toker, u better pray to god some python doesnt quietly slither its way into your house and strike your face in the middle of the night, constricting around your neck, breaking it...

these pythons r no joke, a small one can swallow and digest your entire head, wrap around your neck... it takes a hell of a 15+ python to get its mouth around full-grown human shoulders.. a medium sized one would have no problem eating a kid
