when to flush and harvest? (pictures)

Hi,

First time grow and learning!

I'm 5 weeks into flowering and plan on switching over to distilled water for two weeks and then harvesting.

Question though- is that I see the big white hairs starting to turn amber and I thought that was the indication to harvest. I believe that the longer I go timewise at this point, the high starts to turn towards an indica body type high. Is that correct? Any danger in going to long? How is the potency affected? How strain dependent is all this? Two are burkle and the other... I forget but will check ;)

I also wonder about the tallest cola. It is a very pale white, not sure if thats a good thing or bad. Maybe it's getting too much light so it reacts by reducing chlorophyll? Leaf tips are telling me its too close. I think that next time I will use a screen and train the plants and that way I wont have such a difference in elevation from the top to bottom.

Thoughts? Concerns? High fives?

First, there are not many strains that finish in 7 weeks, so I would think that they need at least 8, maybe 9. Second, if the tips of the colas are white, then you have what is called light bleaching, and you need to raise the light a little bit. The indication that the plant is almost ready to chop is the calyxes, not the hairs. Once the calyxes start to swell I would feed plain water for two weeks and chop. The longer you let it go the more narcotic the high will be. You can also check the trichs with a microscope as it nears harvest time to ensure it is where you want it to be.

Maybe I worded that wrong.. I vegged for 4 weeks and then flowered for 5 for a total of 9 weeks.

Gotcha on the calyxes.

Any downside to keeping them around a bit longer?

you need 8 to 9 weeks MIN for flower if you want it to be ripe and at its peak!.
You Got 3-4 more weeks to go!

I have found that most strains I grow, even if the packaging says less, I have to let em go between 9-11 weeks before they are truely finished. I agree with oldsoul though, the real way to tell when they are almost ready is when the calyxes swell. After doing this for a few years, you can definitely taste the difference between ripe buds and immature buds. It is worth the wait.

3 types of bud from each strain

3 types of bud from each strain

sounds like you are still 3-4 weeks out buddy!!! dont get excited its worth the wait !! but you can get three types high off of each strain ..
GET A 9.99$ MICROSCOPE at radio shack!! watch trichromes !!!! when they are clear and just starting to turn cloudy (and as stated above calaxes sweelll and more than half hair will be red ). pick a couple of buds . wait till the trichs get fully cloudy /starting to amber up. pick some more .... wait till trichs are fully amber pick most rest ,cut back root ball and reveg!!!!!!! repeat......

if you want more uplifting carpenter high pick more early , stoned couch lock -- fully amber . you'll know your strain way better for next round... peace
