HELP! need to fix this smell problem.

hey guys. so my setup is SUPER basic. its just a bedroom with a 3x3 flood table with a 600w HPS hanging above it. the bed, TV, everything else is still in there lol. I keep the room clean, and go to town in it in between cycles. anyway the point im trying to make is that its not a "grow room" its a room with a grow in it LOL.

so I have been doing this on and off for the last 6-7 years, in this same spot. used to use soil, now I grow hydro. but the SMELL has alllways been my only problem. sometimes with the REAL stinkers like the deez and mainly everything else I have, the smell can get prettty out of hand. now I have a very small grow, so its never many plants...but boy does it stink, and its about time I try to do something about it so I can keep doing my thing.

the light hangs infront of a window unit AC, and my temps have always been perfect. I can put it where I need it at with the AC. never had heat issues. theres also a small fan on the floor on the opposite end blowing at the ladies. theres 2 windows in the room, one with the AC, and one thats free...just closed and taped off, lightproof.

SO ANYWAY, the room is about 14x14x8 I was thinking of getting a nice filter and fan setup. only problem is I cant really duct it anywhere, and I cant really be puttin a hole in the house to duct out of. my setup is so simple, I dont really know how to effectively set up a fan and filter, and have it actually kill most, if not all of the smell. I also run Co2, timed at 12/12 w my light. I have a boost bucket and it makes its way around the plants nicely with the AC and little fan moving the air...but thats also kind of another reason that I dont wanna blow everything out of the room.

Im wondering if I could just get a big ass Can filter, with a niice big max fan, and scrub/recirculate the air in the room. do you think this would work? Id get a bigger fan and filter than whats rated for the room. just plop the filter on the floor somewhere in the bedroom, mount the fan ontop nice and tight...think this could work with my kind of setup? is there any good way to just scrub the air in the room and not vent it out anywhere?? the AC brings fresh air in from outside right?

I hope you guys get what Im tryin to say. I really need to take care of this smell problem. hopefully you guys can help!!! I really need all the help I can get, heres 2 pics, hopefully it gives u an idea of what Im talkin about. I know I could devide the room alittle, and kind of section off the grow area, but Im not that handy with building stuff, and I have shit for tools. I could try tho. Iv also considered a big ass tent, but thats pricey and then I may have heat issues when I upgrade to a 1000 watt. the atmosphere in my room is sooooo legit, Id really like to keep it that way. very very simple...just KILL the smell, you know? If I could change nothing about the setup except upgrade my light, and just add an filter and fan somehow to kill the smell, Id be happier than a pig in shit.

sorry for such a long post guys, Iv just been thinkin about this for a few years and now its time to take care of it. I know Ill get lots of good info from you guys. maybe some of you just scrub the air like I wanna try to do. also let me mention, if I can scrub/recirculate the air in the room, and not vent it out anywhere, I would add weather stripping to the door to make it air tight in there...I shoulda done this years ago, I know that will really help with keeping it contained.

I am not sure how well a scrubber will work without it venting somewhere, I think it needs that vacuum effect for it to be efficient. You could try Ona Gel, not sure how well it would work in a large room.

thats really the question I need answered bro. Iv tried Ona in the past. it works pretty well sometimes as masking the smell, but then everything stinks like Ona!! lol. still smells like you got somethin to hide. If I could just knock out most of the smell and maybe supplement with a BIT of ona here and there when I need it, that would be the shit.

Well the only other thing I can think of is an Ozone generator, from what I've read they work but they are pricey.

Get yourself a Stanley Fan.... it's approximately 256cfm and usually under $50.

Get yourself a short piece of flexible 6" ducting and a roll of aluminum tape.

Then get one of these:

Make sure you get the SINGLE-PASS version. Even though you're working in a multi-pass setup, you want the maximum amount of air cleaning possible.

This will cut through the most significant stink, if not eliminate it altogether.

Don't forget to rinse it clean, every 2-3 months.

Yes you can just run the fan in the room. Stay away from those cone filters they don't have enough carbon to do much. My sealed room setup is a can 55 with a fan pulling air through it and dumping into the room. I have zero odor issue.

never grew sour yet but i can only imagine the stank i would pick up a tent that will fit u grow theyre not that expensive and the vent it properly with a filter put it in the bedroom i can stand next to my tent not smell nething then open the door and bam! the smell knocks u out if u want to continue to grow some stank bud i would def look into the tent otherwise look into a less stank strain which prob aint an option after grow the sour deez best of luck brotha hope it all works out

No... just make sure you get the SINGLE-PASS version. That means it cleans the air on the FIRST pass. (very important if you're exhausting your air from the room.)


Too many people going and getting cone filters that are Multi-Pass and wondering why they're exhausting stink.

Your idea will work fine. I've done it myself. Get a big carbon filter and set the fan right on top of it. it will just filter and recirculate your room air.

6 inch valueline fan
hydrofarm variable speed control
6" carbonaire carbon scrubber

Put the fan on top of the big scrubber in the corner of your room....

enjoy no more odor.


If you really want to do it right...you can get a homebox XL...they have seconds at bghydro.com I got mine for like $200 shipped...great deal. And worth every penny. Especially for us "bedroom" growers.

Here's what you should do- get a vaportek optimum 4000

It really does work (do a search) and especially in a small grow like that it will do wonders on a high enough setting (4 or so). Get the neutral cartidges so it doesn't smell like Ona too bad. The price is going to be about the same initially as a carbon scrubber. In the long run its more expensive because the cartidges cost a little bit bit they last for about 2 grow cycles.

Im pretty sure that tomorrow Im gonna grab a can 100 and a 10 inch max fan...kinda pricey, but I wanna do it right. that should do the trick. rooms a decent size, about 1600 cf.

that vaportech looks very cool, its just that I dont want to mask the smell with another, stronger smell...I wanna clean the pot smell out of the air, you know? lol. I used Ona gel for a good while, but it always stinks up the house like ona, and that in itself is weird...plus it never really got all of the smell, did a good job tho for what it is.

I think you would only need 6 inch vortex and a nice can filter you will be good at most an 8inch max fan make sure you get a speed controller I love mine

yeah i plugged that fucker in at my shop yesterday...it is a noisy one. I figured it wont be AS loud once I mount it on the can. Id be glad to gain alittle noise if I can knock the smell out. we'll see. I work at the hydro store...if anything is too loud, doesnt work right, whatever, its back in the box and try somethin else lol...trial and error. figured id start big.
