NATO is supposed to fight terrorism and keep the peace there, not act like an international DEA.I don't know what the laws in Afghanistan are, concerning cannabis but there is local police there and it's not NATO's job to mess with cannabis.The locals have been growing cannabis for centuries and suddenly foreign troops arrive and arrest them for doing their thing - this is not right IMO.
i love how they are trying to link the al queda (lol) guy with the guy driving the truck full of weed. 2 unrelated stories all written together in the same piece.
I agree NATO's job is fighting the Taliban and not busting locals but the problem is amounts like 900kg is not for percy it's for export, it's sold on in order to fund the insurgents fight against the coalition forces.
NATO probably were not looking for ganja but for bomb making equipment and decided to confiscate the gear before it's sold on and the money is used to maim or kill it's troops i don't like to see weed confiscated but on these circumstances i have to agree with the action that has been taken.
P.S. the Afghan national police are normally with the coalition forces on patrols so they would have been the people that confiscated the weed not NATO.

Yeah, that's a hell of a thing. Troopers busting some dude for cannabis on one hand, and another set of troopers guarding some other dude's poppy fields. Afghanistan is one seriously fubar situation -- wtf are we there for again? -- I could have sworn Dubya claimed there would be no "nation-building".
The Taliban only exist because the money from all drug sales pays the peasant to go out and get his ass killed while the commanders hide. Even the little guy pays so called taxes to both the government and taliban to grow.
If the Afghan government has possession of the cannabis most of it will still reach its market with some burned for the media and some kept by the troops. Easy just like Mexico less drug money equals less people dying.

Don't be so naive!Taliban exist because there is completely no hope in this country, there is practically no government, people are uneducated, they have nothing sensible to do with their lives, so they turn to religion and against foreign troops.They are not paid to blow themselves up, this is rubbish.

Poppies and oil pipelines. Pharmaceutical companies have to get their opium for opiates somewhere, you think its cheap to make it sythetically in a lab? You think every oxycotin or percocet out there is sythetic? It was probably made from opium from Afghanistan.
Also, Afghanistan used to be a part of the USSR, so Americans get a big dick about being able to tromp around in tanks in that country. The people are generally defenseless and the government easily toppled and replaced with pro-USA puppets. Other than some opium and cannabis production, the land isn't very useful either. Most of the wealth in oil, ore, and other natural resources are in Kazakhstan. However, look at Afghanistan on a map, it is VERY strategically located! Having control of that region gives pivoting power in all of east and central asia, especially in combination with Iraq. Its just a big game of Risk!

These are just the same excuses they use everywhere. They come into your house here in the USA with guns and a SWAT team, ready to kill you, for growing some plants. And they can use excuses like the money was funding gang violence and promoting crime in the neighborhood. You talk about Kush strains and protecting the cannabis plant and all her rare strains and varieties, the people in Afghanistan have been doing this for centuries. All Kush plants come from this region! If you read your cannabis history, you will see that some of the early westerners that travelled to this region seeking cannabis seeds and genetics to be brought back to Europe and North America laid the foundation of all indoor hybridization as we know it! At the very least, most PNW and Dutch genetics would not be possible if it were not for the work of these people for centuries! These western travellers spoke of the Afghani people to be some of the friendliest and most hospitable people in the world. Even if you did not speak their language, they would still invite you into their home, give you a meal, let you smoke their hash, and sleep in their beds! These people would often times live off close to nothing, and would gladly share their only food with you!
This war has created a great distrust for westerners in the region, and has probably wiped out entire strains that haven't been bred in the west! This is a great set back for protecting and preserving cannabis. A war in Afghanistan should be seen AS a war on cannabis.
Afghan black almost disappeared from the UK all of a sudden there's plenty of it about coincidence? Maybe but i wouldn't blame the troops for chancing their arm at bringing some home to make a little lift after all their risking their lives every day their there for what they hardly earn rock star wages though i wouldn't like to plug a bar or 2 for the trip home lol

Everything, and I mean everything, will change within the next five years to a point that the country will not be recognizable. And if the US does anything at all, it should boost up it's presence in the nation right now. The fight should be taken to another level, a level of a bloodthirsty need to be victorious at all costs...because the shit is getting ready to hit the fan folks.
Trust me...and watch the news...it is getting ready to get real interesting over there.
And for just a tidbit of what I am talking about, google Lithium Afghanistan.
Oh, and my prediction is the the MJ/Hashish trade in Afg. is going to go by the wayside. I highly doubt poppy cultivation will end, but it too will take a big hit. See, farmers want money and they will be afforded more money than they have ever seen in the mining industry.
