I wouldn't recommend using it when other mutagens are available that won't kill you. I'll try to dig around and find the thread we discussed this in extreme detail in.

ah sweet mate, yeah i'm after things that will induce polyploidy, colchicine's the one everyone's been raving about from what i've read, however it is incredibly toxic.

you could do the crocus extraction or buy some rx gout pills online, either way i hope you have plenty of seeds and a lot of time. Would be an interesting long term project. It's just a shame those first generation plants are toxic

yeah i'm studying genetics at the moment and just finished a subject that had a section on polyploidy, it would be great if people found out a decent way of creating polyploid marijuana plants, as it would theoretically up the thc level by 2 (2 x the chromosomes = 2 times the regulatory genes for resin production = twice the bang for your buck when it comes down to the ounce). but yeah seems a bit has been done in this area with no luck so far... but who knows what the future holds!

ps superbolan what did you mean by first gen plants being toxic? does that occur as a result of using colchicine to induce tetraploidy in cannabis?

colchicine is systemic. No part of the plant grown from the treated seeds is nontoxic. You have to grow one out then get seeds from it, then grow them out for smokable material. Even clones cut from a treated mother would be toxic.

sounds like a waste of time then for sure, and could put your own health at risk. cheers for the info mate!

I don't think that's correct...

A SEED treated with a dilute solution will make a mature plant TOXIC to smoke? Sounds like an urban legend to me.

If you're sure...can you give me some links?

colchicine may be toxic, but the amounts used to induce polypoidy are so small compared to what a person with gout or becets disease might take as to be of no consequence. Gout people take up to about a milligram at once and the toxcicity is usually limited to diarrhea and cramping. I have a buddy who will take 0.6 mg every 6 hours for 3 or 4 days when he gets an attack, which is several times a year and he never has any of the side effects that one is warned about.

that said, you get colchicine from someone with gout or overseas pharmacy for that purpose. its cheap and it isn't watched or scheduled.

When they use colchicine to induce tetraploids in rye they wont even handle the first generation used for breeding with bare hands, In the early 80's a number of people got sick and it was reported that it was from from smoking contaminated weed as well. maybe they just smoked a ton of it? it is a cumulative poison and will build up in your body. I have never seen any modern data on its levels in first generation plants, but clark had said the same thing to never smoke first generation plants.

yeah that's it it wouldn't surprise me at all if this is fact as it happens with many other chemicals/compounds like mercury and DDT pesticides etc.
